It’s about time to officially recognize the amazing occupational therapy practitioners that have made significant contributions to the area of s*xual health in occupational therapy and occupational science.

The Institute for S*x and OT is recognizing an OT powerhouse with the first-ever “ISOT Distinguished Scholar Award”!

This Award recognizes an occupational therapy practitioner, student, or researcher who has made tangible contributions to s*xuality and intimacy.

In 2020, a team led by Dr. Beth Ann Walker developed the first framework and assessment focused on s*xual health with occupation The Occupational Therapy S*xual Assessment Framework (OTSAF) provides a model for conceptualizing s*xual health in the context of occupational therapy.

The OTSAF is the foundation for the Occupational Performance Inventory for S*xuality and Intimacy (OPISI), a comprehensive and occupation-based screening and assessment tool. Both the OTSAF and OPISI have contributed to paving a clearer pathway towards giving this ADL the credibility it deserves.

Holistic S*x Therapy for Couples, Individuals, All Genders and Dev, MS OTR/L, CSOT would like to recognize Dr. Beth Ann Walker as the first-ever recipient of the ISOT Distinguished Scholar Award for her work on the OTSAF, the OPISI, and her additional s*xual health-focused contributions to the profession of OT.

Beth Ann Walker, PhD, MS, OTR, QIDP, FAOTA is a professor at the University of Indianapolis, where she teaches in both the School of Occupational Therapy and the Master of Public Health Program.

Dr. Walker is recognized globally for her work related to addressing s*xuality and intimacy in OT, including authoring several textbook chapters, journal articles, presentations, and research within the US and internationally. She was awarded the designation as a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association in 2021 in recognition of “Breaking the Global Silence in Addressing S*xuality and Intimacy”.

Dr. Beth Ann Walker will be honored during the Virtual OT S*x Summit through award presentation and a featured lecture from her to close out the Summit.

“S*xual health is a vital part of the human experience, yet is an area that continues to face challenges due to OT clinicians and professors feeling unprepared to address it. One approach to bridging this gap is through student-professor collaboration, so we would like to share our experience with how we used our student-professor relationship to do just that.

Danielle: I am an experienced clinician and academic who specializes in s*xual health and decided to use my passion, knowledge, and expertise to design capstone experiences for my students.

Katie: I was drawn to a capstone project in s*xual health due to the uniqueness of the topic itself. My interest was piqued when discussing topics of s*xual health with Danielle. Her view of s*xual health through a social justice lens drew me in immediately because I recognized that passion is why I became interested in the field of occupational therapy in the first place.

Collectively, we spent time digging deeper into Katie’s interests and passions, discussing research, and determining the specific direction Katie’s capstone would go.

Throughout the process, we ended up with smaller spin-off projects, multiple conference proposals, and ultimately a completed research-based capstone. A big part about why this collaboration worked so well was because both of us were not only passionate, but showed up wanting to learn more about the topic and from each other.”

Here are 6 topics you will face in the field that your OT education probably never covered…

1. A client who has lost connection to desire after a diagnosis, an injury, or a life transition — and is looking to you for somewhere to start.
2. A client who wants to be s*xually active but cannot figure out how post-injury. You need to know what adaptive equipment and assistive technology exists and how to recommend it.
3. A client experiencing painful in*******se. Pain science, nervous system regulation, identity, and autonomy all live in this conversation.
4. A client who says “I don’t feel s*xy anymore.” You need tools to help them reconnect with their erotic self — not just validate the feeling and move on.
5. A transgender client post-surgery asking about pelvic health. Gender-affirming care, HRT, pelvic changes, and building an environment where that client actually feels safe to ask.
6. A client who participates in kink or B**M and needs you to engage clinically, without judgment and without freezing.
