There are several reasons we might check your baby’s blood sugar after birth: 1. If they’re born premature (less than 37 weeks at my hospital). 2. Mom has diabetes. 3. Baby is a low or high birth weight. 4. If mom has been on certain medications during pregnancy like beta-blockers (they can cross the placenta, increasing insulin and decreasing glucagon in the baby). 5. If they’re jittery or flaccid/low body tone, or any other unusual signs or symptoms that suggest a check would be indicated. There are 3 big things we can do to help improve your baby’s blood sugar and hopefully keep them from a ticket to the NICU! 1. Consider (with the support and direction of your care team or provider) supplementation. 2. Keep that baby warm! Skin to skin is SUPER helpful! 3. Avoid passing the baby around/unwrapping them. We want them to stay cozy and avoid stimulation that is going to burn their energy stores more quickly. Rest is important for them! Be sure to follow and share!
