On Wednesday, September 2nd, Mr. Chalepah and Lawton Public Schools' Tribal Industry Classes were honored with the opportunity to collaborate with renowned artist, writer, and filmmaker Steven Paul Judd (Kiowa-Choctaw) of Lawton, Oklahoma. Together, they are creating a mural that will become a permanent part of the First Americans Museum’s collection in Oklahoma City. 'I am incredibly humbled that my class was selected to represent LPS in this meaningful educational project,' says Mr. Chalepah.
With the support of LPS Indian Education Liaison Raylisha Stanley, students were selected to participate in this experience through the NYCP Grant. This collaboration provides students with a unique opportunity to work alongside a professional artist, express their creativity, explore and experience firsthand the powerful connection between tribal education, art, culture, and community. Students painted 4" inch canvas squares with each specific measure that had a total of 99 pieces to complete the finishing art project.
Through this project, students are not only contributing to a lasting work of art, but are also learning the value of their voices, perspectives, and cultural experiences. It is an extraordinary opportunity for our students to engage in hands-on learning while helping create something that will become part of the cultural legacy of the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In Addition - Mr. Chalepah presented Steven Paul Judd with a blanket for his continuous support, collaboration, partnership in advancing the Tribal Industry Pathway at Life Ready Center.
