Riverside Indian School – Cell Phone & Electronic Device Procedures
Dear Riverside Families and Students,
I hope you are enjoying a safe and restful summer. As we prepare for the upcoming school year, I am writing to share an important update to our cell phone and electronic device procedures. These changes are required under a new Oklahoma state law and are designed to support student learning, safety, and wellbeing across our campus.
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Oklahoma Senate Bill 1312 (2024), codified in Title 70, requires all school districts to prohibit student use of cell phones and personal electronic devices while on campus. To comply with this law—and to uphold our commitment to a focused, healthy learning environment—Riverside Indian School will implement updated procedures for all students.
For residential students, the following morning collection process will be in place each day:
• Before leaving the dormitory for breakfast or school, students will turn in their phone directly to Dorm Staff.
• Dorm Staff will record each device and verify the student’s name on the daily roster.
For day students, the following morning collection process will be in place each day:
• Upon entering the building students will turn in their phones to the school counselor.
• The counselor will record each device and verify the student’s name on the daily roster.
All student devices will be securely stored during the school day and returned to the student at the end of the school day. This ensures compliance with state law while still allowing students appropriate access to their devices once classes have ended.
I want to emphasize that this protocol is not intended to be punitive. Rather, it is meant to protect instructional time, reduce distractions, and support all students in fully engaging with Riverside’s academic, cultural, residential, and athletic programs. Riverside offers a unique environment rich in handson learning and community connection; a phonefree campus during the school day helps students remain present and grounded in these experiences.
We also understand that communication with family is very important, especially for students living away from home. We will continue to support meaningful connections through scheduled communication times, supervised phone access, and multiple avenues for family members to reach staff or their child during the school day.
Our goal is to establish a policy that is respectful, supportive, and consistent for all members of our community. Your partnership is invaluable as we work together to make this transition smooth for our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
