New data shows that women continue to earn less than men, with disparities especially pronounced for many women of color. Those lost wages add up — affecting decisions about education, childcare, homeownership, career opportunities, and retirement.

AAUW is working toward lasting systemic change while making sure women have tools they can use today. Through research, advocacy, and free economic empowerment programs, we’re helping women strengthen their financial futures and advocate for what they’re worth.

Women to remember: Ann Hopkins
"Ann Hopkins was an attorney who bravely pursued a landmark American employment discrimination case after being denied partnership at a law firm for her gender. Told she was “overly aggressive, unduly harsh, difficult to work with,” and “needed a course in charm school,” Ann fought back by suing the firm for s*x discrimination. The landmark case had an important effect on discrimination and diversity in the industry."

Who is Elizabeth Peratrovich? A woman you've probably never heard of, yet her hard work led to our country's first anti-discrimination laws. "The bill passed the Senate which, according to one account, 'was forced to a defensive whisper at the close of that senate hearing by a five foot five in Tlingit woman.'"
