September 13-19 is Adult Education and Family Learning Week, set aside by Congress to stress the importance of literacy for individuals, families and communities. We have joined with the Amsterdam Free Library to provide information and opportunities to increase adult literacy with free 1 to 1 tutoring. We customize each learning plan according to the individual's personal goals - GED preparation, ESL, improve reading and writing or math skills, or workplace skills needed for better job opportunities.

Hello Everyone! I have some recent information that needs to be shared. There is an organization called the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) which conducts a survey about every 10 years to provide a snapshot of the skill levels of adults worldwide. The data for 2022-23 show that a greater percentage of American adults (16-65) have skills at the lowest level for both literacy and numeracy than in 2017. We are further behind the international average now than 7 years
ago!
The survey indicates 59 million Americans read at the lowest level and 73 million have numeracy skills at the lowest levels. This information is in coordination with the National Coalition for Literacy.
This is truly of epidemic proportions and this knowledge needs to be shared with everyone. Without public awareness it will not be addressed and the numbers will continue to grow. America needs access to public education not only for our children but for adults to be able to function and thrive.
Please send this to all your contacts. We can’t make a difference if we don’t acknowledge the problem.
