Native Orange Butterfly Milkw**d is now on Your availability.

Trade gallon containers. Asclepias tuberosa has upright stems supporting clusters of tiny orange flowers. Wonderful presentation from mid summer into early fall. Flowers are followed by tiny green seedpods. Seed collected from the pods are highly viable and are good for re-seeding an area. Butterfly milkw**d is a host plant for the Monarch butterfly. Known to be one of the more tolerant and exceptional selections among the native milkw**d species. Plants mature at a height of 18-24” and a spread of 10-12”. Native and adaptable across the United States.

Mulching—The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

All ornamental plants benefit from mulching when done properly. The coming fall months and early spring are the best times of year to add new mulch to landscape beds and trees. Benefits of mulching include:

* conserve soil moisture
* prevents “crusty” soil surfaces
* maintains more ideal soil temperatures
* minimizes soil temperature fluctuations
* reduces w**d seed germination and subsequent growth
* prevents splashing of soil fungus during irrigation / rain events * lessens cold damage
* slows soil erosion
* reduces soil compaction
* adds aesthetic beauty to the landscape

Mulch annual bedding plants and herbaceous perennials to a depth of 1-2 inches. It is best to mulch shrubs to a depth of 2-3 inches and trees to a depth of 3-4 inch-es. Go “out with mulch”, do not “go up with mulch” (spread mulch horizontally in-stead of piling it vertically). Avoid ‘mulch volcanoes”.

Problems that result from over-mulching plants include:

* starving the shallow roots of oxygen
* killing phloem tissue that moves nutrients through the plant
* more fungal / bacterial infections due to increased moisture
* heat buildup from mulch decomposition damages the stem
* influences pH of underlying soil
* microbials compete with tree roots for nutrition
* rodents can live in and feed on plant roots and stems
* termite infestations (especially when wood is used)

Slender Silhouette Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Slender Silhouette’)

This unique selection is now available in 15 gallon containers at Bracy’s! Most of you all know this special find from Tennessee—a fast-growing, columnar cultivar of the sweet gum, prized for its tall, narrow form and striking seasonal foliage.

Slender Silhouette typically grows 50–60 ft tall with a very narrow spread of 5–8 feet (sometimes narrower). The tight columnar habit is more strongly fastigiate than many similar habit trees. A fast growth rate makes for easy establishment and an instant impact statement in the landscape.

The star-shaped, glossy, dark green in summer and then foliage will turn to shades of yellow, orange, red or burgundy in the fall. Flowers are small, insignificant in spring. This selection does produce the round, prickly, woody fruit capsules in fall but do to the tree’s growth habit all the sweetgum balls stay within the canopy.

Ideally suited for narrow spaces, medians, small gardens, building corners and between structures. Great living fence option. Single specimens or small groupings make for a strong vertical accent.

Full sun lovers but handle light pm shade. Typical well-drained soil. Hardy north going into USDA zone 5. Very windy and weather resistant.

A winner that many of you will want to start using.

Falling Waters Bald Cypress—Our Best Crop Ever! 15 gallon.

Falling Waters Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum ‘Falling Waters’) is a weeping cultivar of the native bald cypress, typically reaching 14–20 feet tall with pendulous branches, bright green deciduous needles, and copper‑bronze fall color.

This selection is a distinctive, strongly weeping habit that is valued for its graceful architecture and seasonal color. It is deciduous, losing its needles in winter, which reveals its sculptural branching.

Key Characteristics

Growth Habit: Weeping/pendulous branches with a central leader. plantlust.com
Height & Spread: 14–20 ft tall, 10–15 ft wide. Some sources list up to 20 ft tall and 10 ft wide.

Foliage: Bright green needles in spring/summer; copper‑bronze or golden fall color.

Bark: Reddish brown, exfoliating, adding winter interest.

Deciduous Conifer: Drops needles in winter, unlike most conifers.

Growing Conditions

Plant in full sun to partial shade. Prefers moist, acidic soils; tolerates wet or boggy conditions and even standing water. Also adapts to average, well-drained soils. Irrigate to maintain regular moisture. Typically USDA Hardiness Zones 6-9. Use as an accent or specimen tree, near ponds and water/rain gardens. Also adapted to low maintenance rock gardens.
