FROM THE ROOTS UP🌾
Bioregional Herbalism Apprenticeship
March-November 2027
Amherst/Northampton, MA area

Now enrolling for 2027!✨🍯🧺🫙🌿

When I first started offering these classes (way back in the day) they were held as seasonal class series. Folks could choose to sign-up for the spring, summer or fall sessions...but before long I found that most people were signing-up for all 3 sessions! And thus the full apprenticeship was born. And after many years of students asking I finally offered a Year 2 apprenticeship and now folks want a Year 3 so we'll see!! And if you were one of those OG students feel free to raise your hands in the comments below! Thank you so much for showing up and believing in me and helping Milk & Honey Herbs grow into what it is today💞

I've always felt a bit proud that my business and offerings have grown organically in this way...it feels very aligned with the rhythms of nature. I've never pushed it and have let growth unfold in its own time. I treat my business like an ecosystem💚

I guess I'm feeling a little sappy that this coming year will be the 15th YEAR (!) of From the Roots Up!! It's been an absolute honor and privilege to be a liaison between my students and the plants and- truth be told- I often feel like a bit of a matchmaker🥰 I hear over and over again how students feel like they feel like the plants we meet in class have become their true allies and even friends 💞 And it's lovely to watch connections and friendships blossom between students too of course!

If you'd like to join us and make new friends (both plant and human!) you can get all the details here:

I hope some of you can join us!🌿✨🍯💕🙏🏼

I love this time of year, when the gardens reach their fullness and are sprawling onto themselves and the abundance is just bursting forth and can't be contained. A few plants having a party in my garden right now are the cherry tomatoes, chicory and basil and I've been combining them (along with this year's garlic crop) to make a salad which is sooooo delicious and combines all 5 flavors. Did you know that meals that contain all the flavors (sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent) are considered the most medicinal and balanced?

Also, how freaking gorgeous are Chicory flowers!?😍😭💙✨

Who's popping off in your garden right now in the glorious mess of late summer!?! And how are you putting up and/or enjoying the bounty?! I'd love to hear!

Chicory, Tomato & Basil Salad with fresh Garlic 🍅🌿🧄🥗
-2 c chicory or dandelion leaves, chopped (HINT: The "dandelion" greens sold in most grocery stores are actually a variety of cultivated chicory!
-1 c basil leaves, torn
-1 c tomatoes, sliced
-1 clove fresh garlic, grated or pressed
-Pinch sea salt
-Extra virgin olive oil
-Garnish with chicory flowers if you have them💙

Toss the veggies in a bowl together. Add a pinch of salt and drizzle with the olive oil. Enjoy!

We had such a beautiful day in class this past weekend working with late summer beauties Bee Balm, Purple Loosestrife and Comfrey✨🌞🌿

In our From the Roots Up apprenticeships we building relationships with the abundant medicinals of the northeast bioregional, learn their ecology, medicinal properties, sustainable harvesting practices and more. Building the home apothecary is also a huge focus and we make medicine with every plant we work with in class, this weekend it was Bee Balm oxymel, Comfrey oil and Purple Loosestrife tincture.

Registration for our 2026 classes will be opening soon!✨🌿🍯🫙🐝

Inter-Kingdom Love: Tree & Mushroom Walk
The Plant and Fungi Kingdoms are inextricably intertwined in forest ecologies. On this walk through the surrounding forest, we'll learn the identification, medicinal use, and sustainable harvest of the numerous medicinal trees of the northeast and their mushroom pairs, such as Eastern Hemlock-Reishi, Oak-Maitake, Birch-Birch Polypore, the favorite trees of Turkey Tail, Lion's Mane, Oysters and more. The northeast is over 75% forested, and learning tree identification is a pathway into assessing potential mushroom habitat and a wonderful way to deepen one's relationship with the forest. Participants will learn to read the herbal landscape and meet the incredible medicinal trees and mushrooms of the northeast.

Wow, if you're anywhere in the northeast today, you know the air quality is BAD. Like worse than I've seen it in years! We're experiencing smoke coming down from wildfires in Canada and the upper Midwest and it's so thick you can smell it and the sunlight is all muted and the light is, well...just off and weird.

I went out to feed my goats some Marshmallow leaf from the gardens to help their respiratory systems since the poor things are out in it and also to collect some for myself and remembered we have a class in our Viriditas class library all about herbs for fire season and supporting your health during and after fire events like this!

And I've made it free for all for the rest of the summer. No paywall.

1 + 2. One of our sweet goats, Butterfly, relishing the Marshmallow leaves I'm feeding her to help with the Smokey skies today
3-5. Marshmallow (Althea officinalis) in my garden. A wonderful demulcent that moistens mucous membranes in the respiratory system, which get very easily irritated from excess smoke inhalation. Make a tea and sip throughout the day. Other nice additions would be Mint, Tulsi and/or Purselane 🌿💚🙏🏼

These last few weeks have been so incredible it's hard to even know where to begin!

We began our journey here in Greece with the MycoBotanica Spring Herbal Immersion, with our amazing collaborators Olga of Smugtown Mushrooms and Eleni Bourou, winding our way through the stunning Zagori Region in the Epirus Mountains of northern Greece with a group of intrepid plant and fungi-lovers.

Along the way we experienced the INCREDIBLE biodiversity of the Vikos Gorge, Aoos River Valley, and multiple national parks, met numerous wildlife including wild boar, fox, tortoises, the tiny Roe Deer and even the heavily protected Eurasian Brown Bear, explored ancient UNESCO-protected stone villages, made own own hydrosol, visited Lena of The Pokari Project and learned about her efforts to preserve the area's wool-based weaving traditions, dyed garments with wildflowers, made solid kyphi incense with plants carefully gathered from the land around us, drank numerous cups of Greek Mountain Tea, bathed in crystalline turquoise waters, fawned over the native orchids and seemingly endless wildflowers, cooked in the field and picked everywhere we went, pilgrimaged to high subalpine meadows and met the incredible flora growing there in the shadows of snow-capped peaks, made flower essences, vinegars and oxymels, and I could just keep going on and on!!!

Next my daughters and I struck off south on our own to the Peloponnese, the land of our Greek ancestors. We had to visit Delphi on the way ofc, then stayed in Kalamata where my mother line hails from, drank copious amounts of lemonade made from the lemon tree in our courtyard and bathed in the sea daily. We found ourselves asking- how could they ever have left!?!! While of course simultaneously understanding the deeper geopolitical issues, poverty and violence that drives diasporas....holding in our hearts the knowing that returning to these lands is an immense privilege that garnishes both deep grief and immense joy. Feeling so beyond blessed and I will hold this trip in my heart forever and ever 💞💞💞💞💞
