Pulse nightclub. Ten years ago today. What I remember most vividly was right wing media immediately and vociferously asserting that this "wasn’t an attack on LGBT people---it was an attack on Americans." Because they didn’t want anyone sympathizing with us.
If this had been an attack on "Americans," Omar Mateen would have sh0t up a Walmart. He didn’t do that. He drove 100 miles out of his way, past all sorts of Walmarts, Home Depots, churches, schools, county fairs, etc. to go to that one specific LGBT nightclub. That's an attack on LGBT people.
If you want to terrorize "Americans," you don't pick a place where 95% of "Americans" would never go and could not imagine themselves being, who could not think that "that could have been me." Mateen wanted to terrorize LGBT people. Full stop.
WE WILL NOT BE ERASED FROM OUR OWN TRAGEDY.
I've mastered the art of saying "pardon me" but conveying "move, idiot"
It's not just the kids who die by su***de who are tragic victims of bullying. It's also the ones who die a little inside. Who turn inward and become withdrawn and reclusive. Who lose all their self-confidence and can never get it back. Who spend the rest of their lives fearing other people and avoiding social situations. Who learn that they can't rely on or trust anybody, least of all the people who are supposedly responsible for protecting them. This is how bullying destroys people's lives, in ways that don't make the news.
