We Work with Writers
We believe that every writer needs a reader. Writing Center tutors work with undergrad, graduate, staff, post-doc, and faculty writers on any academic genre at any point in the writing process. Our highly-trained tutors from a variety of disciplines help writers develop a draft, clarify an argument, gain control over sentence structure, re-organize a text, and learn to reflect on and build productive writing practices. We meet individually with writers in 45-minute consultations both face-to-face and online. After an initial conversation about the writing project, the tutor and writer read the text and discuss options for its revision. Writers often bring just an idea or an assignment to the Center and work with a tutor on how to begin writing. We Work with Instructors
Our tutors are available to visit your classes to explain what we do and answer any questions your students might have. Presentations take about ten minutes, and some students have told us that it’s helpful to learn about the Writing Center from a fellow student writer. We are also happy to collaborate with you on teaching a writing-related concept in your class. If you’re interested in scheduling a visit or collaboration, please write to us at [email protected]. We hope that instructors will encourage students to visit the Center, but we ask that instructors not require students to see a tutor or offer extra credit for visits. Our mission is to work with self-motivated writers seeking support, and because we have a small staff, we do not have the capacity to guarantee all required appointments. For these reasons, tutors do not sign notes or otherwise provide instructors with information about students who visit the Writing Center.
