Honoring Mabel Ping-Hua Lee this Women’s History Month, a fearless activist, scholar, and trailblazer who fought for women’s rights even when she herself was denied the vote. Her courage reminds us that progress is built by those who dare to challenge injustice. ✨

Our Story

The Yuri Kochiyama Cultural Center (YKCC) is one of the four cultural centers that operates under the Center for Multicultural Advancement and Student Success (CMASS). The cultural center was named in honor of Yuri Kochiyama on April 8, 1999. It was named on behalf of Ms. Kochiyama, a Japanese American, for her dedication and tireless work to address social justice issues, build bridges of communication between Asians and other communities and her dedication to the civil rights movement in the United States

The cultural center serves the needs of Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi, and Arab American (APIDAA) students at UMass. Additionally, we do a variety of cultural and educational events that educates the UMass campus on the cultures of our students. The cultural center also works with Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) in many ways. For example, by providing our space that can be reserved for events through Campus Pulse. And the YKCC serves as an informal meeting place for students to do work or hang out. The Cultural Center encourages all students interested in the peoples and cultures of Asia to become involved in its activities.
