To celebrate the conclusion of our 2024–2025 Language Access Planning Institute, we created a poster inspired by the Rosetta Stone—an enduring reminder of the value of multilingual documents and language learning for humanity.

Participating schools are invited to display the poster in their spaces, and we’re happy to share copies with others, too!

Special Issue Spring 2027: In Memoriam: Thalia Pandiri

For more than twenty years, Thalia Pandiri (1943–2025) stewarded Metamorphoses as a vehicle for international literature and its translations. To honor her memory, we seek submissions that intentionally engage with Thalia’s work, her legacy, or on the process of collaborating with her, for publication in our Spring 2027 issue.

Submissions may include:

Translations that encompass Thalia’s areas of specialty: ancient and modern Greek literature, Medieval Latin, and modern drama, with a 500–1,000-word note that contextualizes the work and connects it to Thalia’s interests and/or publications.

Reflective essays about Thalia, her contributions, and personal accounts of collaborating with her. Longtime or frequent Metamorphoses contributors are especially encouraged to submit work on this topic.

Commentary on a specific published work or works by Thalia, including translations, essays, and critical writing.

Please follow our General Submissions guidelines when submitting.

To be considered for this issue, submissions must be sent by October 31, 2026 to [email protected] with the subject “Submission: Thalia Pandiri Special Issue.”

In 2024 - 2025, at the Edwin C. Gentzler Translation Center we collaborated with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to design the Language Access Planning Institute which provided 18 months of training on the creation of languagea ccess plans to teams from the following public schools: Barnstable, Quincy, Revere, and Salem. The institute combined presentations and conversations with task-oriented workshops and district-specific coaching sessions. At the end of the institute each district had a strong draft and presentation of their language access plan.

We created this eight-part video series to encourage more districts in and beyond to create their own language access plans. We share the videos on our website and welcome all to view and share:

Grace Holleran, a literary translator from Portuguese and scholar specializing in activist translation, is happy to be joining Metamorphoses as the new editor-in-chief. Professor Holleran holds a PhD in Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies and Theory from the UMass Dartmouth and is a Lecturer in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at the UMass Amherst. She worked as an editorial assistant for Tagus Press (Center of Portuguese Studies and Culture, UMass Dartmouth) from 2021–2024 and is currently an editor for the literary translation journal Barricade. Her translations of Catarina Lins, João Melo, Maria do Rosário Pedreira, and Fernando Pessoa have been published in TILT by Tilted House, Brittle Paper, Gávea-Brown, The Shoutflower, and others, and have been featured at the New Orleans Poetry Festival and the Rotterdam International Poetry Festival. She is the translator, with the late Professor Christopher Larkosh, of Christine Greiner’s The Body in Crisis, published by the University of Michigan Press (2021). Professor Holleran writes and presents research on networks of translation in the alternative press in Brazil and Portugal.

The UMass Amherst Bilingual Hub hosted its 2026 Seal of Biliteracy Award Ceremony on Saturday, May 9 at the Carney Family Auditorium in Furcolo Hall, to honor the bilingual achievements of 82 high school students who have demonstrated outstanding proficiency in two or more languages.
