A busy week for the UMass Transportation Center!

Baystate Roads exhibited at the New England Public Works Expo, celebrating its 40th anniversary with public works professionals from across the region. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to learn about our programs, catch up and celebrate with us!

Our team also attended the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s 2026 Research and Innovation Symposium, featuring projects on roadway safety, artificial intelligence, pavements, structures and more. Presentations and poster sessions offered opportunities to connect with colleagues and explore how research can address transportation challenges.

From public works training to transportation research, we’re proud to be part of these conversations across New England!

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, honor the bravery and sacrifice of first responders, and stand with the families and communities forever changed by that day.

May we continue to carry forward the spirit of unity, service, and compassion shown in the days that followed.

We will never forget.

Labor Day may be the unofficial last day of summer, so we’re looking back at a busy few months at the UMass Transportation Center.

From trainings across MA to conferences, webinars, community events and opportunities to connect with transportation and public works professionals near and far, our team covered a lot of ground this summer.

We’re grateful to everyone who hosted us, partnered with us, learned with us and helped make it all happen.

How should transportation safety evolve as AI and automation become more capable?

Join NEUTC on September 24 for The Human Still Matters: Rethinking Automotive Safety in the Age of AI and Automation, featuring Bryan Reimer, Ph.D., Research Scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics and MIT AgeLab.

Bryan will explore why people remain a critical part of the safety system and how better human-automation relationships can help create safer, smarter transportation.

and MAPFRE Summer Reminder: Slow Down and Move Over

The "Move Over" law requires all drivers approaching stationary emergency, highway maintenance, utility, or tow vehicles with flashing lights to move to the next adjacent lane if it is safe to do so. If changing lanes is not possible, drivers must proceed with caution and reduce their speed significantly.

Golden Gears empowers older adults to use their local bikeshare system and bicycle infrastructure through free hands-on riding instruction, classroom learning, peer conversations, and a guided group ride on the Connecticut River Walk and Bikeway,
