It's that time of the semester!
Saturday, May 1st at 12-2pm Eastern Time is our bi-annual College for Kids Event! It is a fun, educational program for kids ages 6-12 years old full of activities in STEM, Humanities, and Health. Our theme this semester is "Sports," and we include all different types of student interests such as dance, musical theatre, net sports, and team sports! Bring your best dancing shoes and engineering cap, we can't wait to see you there!

Finally it is my turn to introduce myself! I am Danielle Efrat, the second co-chair of Communications and Outreach. We are the people behind these posts and we are so excited for this upcoming year!
I am a Sophomore starting this spring, majoring in Art History with minors in Art and Education. In the future I hope to teach high school Art History.
One of my favorite teaching stories was when I was an assistant for the middle school’s musical my freshman year of high school. I was helping out with stage crew and had these four girls work on making masks for the wildebeests in another room. I came into the room and they were all silently drawing, so I started talking to them and getting them excited to work with each other on this project. We were all laughing and coming up with a bunch of ideas for the masks that they couldn’t wait to come back, hang out, and make some masks. After that day they were an unstoppable team. Seeing them light up at the product of their hard work gave me so much joy I’ll never forget it.

Today I get to introduce myself! My name is Jessica Shay and I am a co-chair of Communication and Outreach. One of our responsibilities includes managing the social media platforms, and crafting these introductions!
I will be a sophomore at UMass Amherst this fall, currently majoring in English and minoring in Psychology. This winter I plan to apply into the Special Education major offered by the College of Education as well. My goal after UMass is to teach elementary aged students, as a lead classroom teacher or in special education.
A great memory I have from teaching occurred during my senior year of high school. In my hometown, I ran a dance class for children with varying abilities called Happy Feet. Getting to sing and dance with them was truly the highlight of each week. One day during class one of my dancers, who is mainly nonverbal, exclaimed “Happy Feeeeeeet”!! Due to her limited language we were shocked but so happy that our time together brought her joy. In the future, I hope to continue helping children learn, grow and DANCE 😊

Meet our second Co-Chair of Community Development, Sarah!

Sarah is in her Junior year, pursuing a Psychology major, and an Education minor. She is hoping to teach fourth grade!
“I love every interaction I have with kids! There are so many stories I could tell, but one that resonates with me is from my senior year of high school. I was babysitting for this family everyday after school and the little girl was just shy of 3 years old at the time. We were playing in the basement, and then she asked for some water, so I ran quickly up to the kitchen. The next thing I hear is, “BABYSITTERRR!!! BABYSITTER DOWN!!!” I could not stop laughing because I loved how she said the first thing that came to her mind. Although she knew my name, she referred to me as “babysitter” since she knew that was my role in her life. Children are so bright and clever, which is why I want to have a career where I am always around them. They make me so happy, and there’s definitely never a dull moment :)”

Ally is in her Senior year, pursuing a Psychology major, and an Education minor. She is hoping to teach elementary school!
“One of my favorite teaching stories is about a preschool girl I worked with. She told me that she was an only child and I helped her write a journal about her experience as an only child. Throughout the year she would mention it and draw pictures of just her and her parents... The next year I had her sister in my class. ”

Meet our second Chair of Volunteering, Patience!

Patience is in her Sophomore year, pursuing a History major, and a Spanish minor. She is hoping to teach high school or seventh grade!
One of her funniest interaction with kids was this summer at the day camp she works at. “We were working on a painting project and one of the 6 year olds in my group brought up Bob Ross and began quoting him throughout the entire project. He even felt the need to cut out a headband and attach a piece of brown paper to make it look like Bob Ross’ hair. Needless to say his Bob Ross inspiration definitely payed off as I was very impressed with his final project!”

Chelley is in her Senior year, pursuing a double major in Early Childhood Education and Psychology. She is hoping to teach Preschool inclusion!
She shares her funniest teaching story, “I used to do a little girls hair every day so I used to do a little girls hair every day so once when her mom got her hair cut she asked if miss Chelley did it.” She says another one her funniest interactions was being called miss michelley because they mixed up miss Chelley and miss Michelle.
