In 1985, Florence Parker became the third woman inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame. The author of The First 125 Years: A History of Distributive and Service Cooperation, Florence was also the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics first full-time cooperative specialist. There she developed a reporting system for cooperative statistics.

She never missed a Cooperative League Congress from 1920 to 1956, and she wrote two books based on her observations. Never idle in retirement, Florence continued her active concern for consumer co-ops and co-op development until her last days.

In 1983, Louise McCarren Herring became the second woman inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame four years after Mary Arnold.

Louise was a true cooperative pioneer having personally organized over 500 credit unions in Ohio. She is known to the U.S. credit union movement as the “Mother of Credit Unions” and was the founder and first managing director of the Ohio Credit Union League.

In August of 1934, Louise went on a trip of a lifetime to serve as a delegate to a conference in Estes Park, CO where the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) was incorporated. Later, Louise would represent Ohio on the new CUNA board of directors.

“While COVID-19 did not create systemic inequalities, it certainly has made these inequalities starker as we look to the data around mortality rates for minorities, the fact that people of color and lower-income people are much more likely to be unemployed and without health insurance, or that working class people are the ones much more likely to risk exposure,” National Cooperative Business Association CLUSA International President and CEO Doug O’Brien said. “Change must happen, and the only way it will happen is if we work as a community to build a more inclusive economy.”
