Fun fact! The Beowulf manuscript was one of the earliest in a transition from the more traditional uncial insular script to Carolingian. You can see the influence of some older letter forms in d, f, g(ᵹ), s(ſ), and w(ƿ). There are also examples of letters that no longer exist in English (though we should bring them back, I’d say), such as þ, ð, and æ.

Hildegard von Bingen, the twelfth-century abbess, is one of the earliest known female composers of music, but she also created one of the earliest known constructed languages, Lingua Ignota, which may have been used to help interpret the divine visions she is said to have received.

Prof. Jessica Barr, Comparative Literature 340 – Mystical Literature – MW 2:30-3:45PM

This class will explore mystical literature of a variety of religious traditions. Reading these texts as literary expressions of union or contact with the transcendent, we will analyze the ways in which they seek to capture what is usually considered to be an inexpressible, non-verbal experience. Readings will draw from the mystical traditions of Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. We will also read one twentieth-century account of a psychedelic experience.
