Central Sands Community High School

Central Sands Community High School Central Sands is a tuition-free, public 9-12th grade HS-Collaborative | Sustainable | Project Based | Waldorf

Drawing inspiration from Waldorf pedagogy, we seek to create a learning community that fosters individual growth through the processes of thinking, feeling, and willing. Thinking processes will be developed through knowledge based learning and integrated curriculum. With an emphasis on process over product, and the utilization of self-assessment, students will develop self-motivation and a growth mindset. The teaching and practice of mindfulness will enhance our students’ thinking skills.

On day seven, we said goodbye to La Flor and made our way through the mountains to Playa Hermosa on the Pacific coast. Along the way, we stopped to marvel at the Arbul de la Paz (Peace Tree). And we needed that peace to help us cope with an hour and a half delay at a bridge that was being repaired, and a several hour traffic jam in Liberia! What should have been a four hour drive took eight hours. But we had to remind ourselves that even though we were stuck in traffic, we were still in Costa Rica, and that was pretty awesome.

Day six of our trip took us to Catarata, a beautiful, huge waterfall in the mountains! It was quite a hike, but we were rewarded with a dip in a river pool. That evening, we had a final potluck with our host families. We are so grateful to the people of La Flor for their hospitality! So many friends were made.

On day five we had our last day with the elementary students, and it was hard to say goodbye, but they gave us a wonderful send off when we exited the bus, and it made us all feel like rock stars. Then it was a day of adventure, with zip lining, thermal pools, and a night hike at a biological reserve.
