Watch a hummingbird in a garden and you’ll notice something: it doesn’t go for the biggest or brightest bloom. It goes for the flowers shaped just right for it.

That’s how I think about the independent school search. The most well-known name isn’t always the one that will help your child thrive. The right fit is the one built for who they are.

Fall visits are full of impressive details: the facilities, the stats, the beautiful quad. All of it matters, but none of it tells you how your student actually feels there.

On your next visit, I’d suggest paying less attention to the tour and more attention to your student. Notice when their shoulders drop. Notice what they’re curious about without being prompted. Then, on the drive home, resist the urge to share your impressions first. Ask them what stood out and simply listen.

Their honest reaction is some of the most valuable information you’ll gather throughout your admissions process!

Every fall I talk to parents who assume there’s a master calendar everyone else already knows, and that they missed the memo. There isn’t one.

Timelines vary enormously by student, by school, by what the family actually needs. What matters more than where you are on a calendar is whether you understand what you’re looking for and why. That clarity can come in September. It can come in January.

The families who feel calm through this process are rarely the ones who started earliest, they’re the ones who took the first step instead of waiting to feel ready for the whole leap.

This Sunday is the Connor’s Climb 5K, and I’m so proud to once again be a sponsor and past volunteer! 10 years and counting...

Student mental health and well-being are such an important part of the work I do every day. I also believe strongly in giving and paying it forward, whether that means sharing my time, my talents, or sometimes my small treasure.

Connor’s Climb is doing incredibly important work right here in New Hampshire, bringing su***de prevention education into schools, supporting students and faculty, and helping to break the stigma around talking openly about mental health.

I’d encourage families in this moment to resist the urge to jump straight to a list of schools. The more useful first question is about the student: how do they learn best, what kind of community helps them grow, what does a typical week need to look like for them to feel like themselves.

The school list gets easier to build once that picture is clear. Skipping ahead to names before understanding what your student needs is where most of the friction in this process comes from.

A gentle reminder as the new school year kicks off: you do not have to have next year figured out yet. I know August can feel loaded, especially if last year was a hard one. But the families I work with best are not the ones who arrive with a perfect plan.

They’re the ones who arrive with a question and some room to think it through together. If you’re carrying any quiet worry about whether this year’s school is truly the right fit, or whether your child needs something different for what’s ahead, you don’t need to solve it alone. A question I get often: “Is it too early to reach out if we’re just starting to think about this?” Never.

In fact, this is exactly the point where a Parent Strategy Session is most useful. It’s not a sales conversation, it’s an hour where we look honestly at your student, your goals, and what direction actually makes sense.

Some families leave that session ready to move forward with a full search. Others leave with clarity and nothing more, and that’s a completely valid outcome too. This is always the first step, whenever you’re ready to take it.
