One of my favorite parts of this work is returning to schools over the years and seeing not only what’s changed, but what has remained steadfast in their mission. My recent visit to The Gow School was a wonderful reminder of both.

I’ve always appreciated Gow’s deep expertise in supporting students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences, but it was especially exciting to see firsthand how the school continues to evolve. There’s a wonderful energy on campus right now, from the beautiful new Howard Hall to the thoughtful ways the faculty continue to refine how they support students both academically and personally.

What strikes me every time I visit is that there isn’t a “Gow student.” Every student is different, and the support reflects that. Whether it’s reconstructive language instruction, executive functioning coaching, or helping a student discover the learning strategies that finally make school feel successful, everything is individualized. The goal isn’t simply to help students succeed in the classroom, it’s to help them understand how they learn, build confidence, and become independent.

I invite you to check out my recent blog post about a moment I had in the grocery store recently.

Sometimes the greatest gift isn’t tighter control. It’s the confidence to try new things, knowing they always have a place to come home to. When my parents chose boarding school for my brother and me, it was one of the greatest gifts they ever gave.

One session...one conversation. That’s sometimes all it takes to see a path you couldn’t see before.

This is exactly why I do this work. Finding the right fit isn’t about finding a school. It’s about finding the school where your child will genuinely thrive, sometimes in a place you hadn’t even considered yet.

If you’re just starting to think about next steps, a Parent Strategy Session is where that clarity begins. Link in bio to learn more.

With many new faces lately, time for an introduction!
I’m Elizabeth, founder of Hall Educational Resources.

I’m a proud mom of 3 amazing kids (now young adults!) and also a boarding school alum, as well as former boarding school trustee and parent! I try to visit more than 50 campuses each year to keep current on the feel of each one. I’m a Certified Educational Planner, and for the last 16 years, an independent educational consultant based in Exeter, NH. I’m also a serious tea enthusiast!

My focus: helping families find the boarding school where their child can truly thrive based on who they are!

Not just any school. The right one. Glad you’re here, say hello!

Families don’t come to me looking for a list of schools. They come looking for someone who will truly understand their student, and who knows the difference between a school that looks right on paper and one that actually is right for them.

That distinction changes everything.

If the search feels overwhelming right now, that’s not a sign you need more information. It’s a sign you need a better framework. Let’s build one together.

Some schools stay with you long after you’ve left campus. Groton School is one of those places for me.

It’s easy to assume that a school with Groton’s history and reputation might feel intimidating or overly serious. But every time I visit, I’m reminded of something completely different. What stands out isn’t the prestige; it’s the humility.

The campus itself reflects that. It’s undeniably beautiful, but not flashy. There’s a quiet elegance to it that feels authentic rather than showy, and in many ways, that’s a perfect reflection of the community. Their campus is literally built around “The Circle,” a large circular green and I love how that stunning feature brings everyone together!

With a smaller student body, students are truly known. They build genuine relationships with their teachers, advisors, coaches, and classmates. There’s space to ask questions, take risks, and grow, all within a community that values kindness and character just as much as academic achievement.

I often tell families that the right fit isn’t always about the biggest name or the most recognizable school. It’s about finding a place where a student feels challenged, supported, and comfortable being exactly who they are.

Groton offers something really special for students who are intellectually curious, value meaningful relationships, and want to be part of a close-knit community. It’s a place where excellence speaks quietly, where success isn’t measured by who can be the loudest in the room, and where students leave not only exceptionally well educated, but genuinely grounded.

A special thank you to Jamie Funnell for so generously sharing his time during my recent visit and for the thoughtful conversations we’ve continued to have since about the students I’m fortunate to be working with. Those conversations, and the partnership between schools and educational consultants, are such an important part of helping students find the communities where they’ll truly thrive.

Visits like this are one of my favorite parts of this work. Every campus has its own story, its own personality, and its own students who will thrive there.

This week on Hall Pass: how do you know when it’s time to bring in an expert?

I wrote this post for every family who’s been Googling boarding schools at midnight, feeling like they’re missing something but not sure what.

Seven signs you might need a boarding school consultant — and what working with one actually looks like.

Summer is a great time to take the pressure off entrance testing.

While some boarding schools have returned to requiring the SSAT or ISEE, others continue to offer test-optional admissions. Every school is a little different, which is why having a thoughtful strategy matters.

I’m often asked how much emphasis I place on test scores. The truth is, they are just one piece of a much larger application. Admissions committees are looking at the whole student—their character, interests, extracurriculars, academic record, recommendations, essays, and potential to contribute to the school community.

That said, being familiar with the SSAT or ISEE before the busy fall season can make a world of difference. A little preparation now can help students walk into their testing with more confidence and less stress.

I’m a firm believer in taking the no-stress approach! My goal is never to create more pressure. It’s to help families feel prepared, informed, and ahead of the game. That sense of clarity and calm is what allows me to help students show up authentically with their best foot forward.

This is what the right school looks like.

Not the most prestigious one. Not the one everyone at your country club is talking about. Not the one with the best ranking website someone forwarded you.

The right school is the one where your student walks in and something clicks. Where they’re known. Where they’re challenged in the ways they need to be challenged and supported in the ways they need to be supported.

That picture you’re imagining of your kid, happy and thriving and exactly where they’re supposed to be? That’s always the goal.
