Quite possibly our most beautiful day as a community…Each year the campuses gather at our idyllic Farm School place of origin for a day full of festivities, including student generated booths, games, entertainment, food, and pure love and joy. We end with a procession around our scrappy, imperfect maypole made from recycled materials. Students, teachers, parents, grandparents, friends and alumni visit. Yes, it’s hippy dippy in all the ways possible. It’s not fancy and formal. The day and the maypole are exactly the essence of Sparhawk, a motley mix of beautiful, unique humans coming together in the spirit of community, honored as individuals and celebrated and strengthened as a community. It’s pure magic.

Yesterday there was a what seemed miraculous break in the rain and the sun burst through the clouds, just in time for our Wednesday Theme Time outdoor activities This week we once again turned to indigenous wisdom, as we have been guided by throughout the school year, to explore reciprocity with nature, being responsible stewards of the earth and taking a look at our impact upon the earth. “Every day should be Earth Day!” one student proclaimed. We wholeheartedly agree! Digging for our local roots activities included dissecting the history and science behind fish composting ,learning about pollination and preparing and planting our garden beds with the 3 Sisters (corn, beans and squash) as well as the 4th sister (sunflowers). The day was rounded out by some earth loving poetry since April is National Poetry month. A truly inspirational afternoon!

A little throwback to our sap boil down and pancake celebration earlier this month which coincided with the Zogalikas or Maple Sugar Making Moon as the Abenaki call it. This year our collection window was much shorter than past years and yields. This raised a lot of questions and reflection for our community, about our collection process as well as on the shifts and changes in the environment and on our earth mother. We show gratitude for these lessons as well as for the sweet yield, be it small this year, no less celebratory and satisfying!

We also had two incredible presentations today for our Upper School students. Deo Mwano, who is a social-impact innovator whose work is focused on unifying and empowerment in education with a strong focus on diversity and inclusion. his presentation, “ A Positive Climate and Culture: Being a Kind Human,” had our students up and out of their seats, working together, sharing their voices and building community.

True Robotics from WPI also visited and let our students test run their robots in STEM challenges that demonstrated how design thinking can impact education.

Teaching hard history is tricky, particularly for elementary aged students. We aim to keep learning safe and engaging while offering multiple lenses for exploration and guiding our students to question facts and truths.

Since our year long social studies theme is all about digging into local history, we felt an opportunity would be missed if we didn’t explore and unpack the Salem witch trials together, given that Salem, MA is a neighboring community as well as a legendary place across the globe.

So how did we take a potentially scary topic and break it down for students as young as 1st grade? We entered with a lighter lens as a stepping stone, by way of a mock trial. The accused fictional characters and their persecution, coupled with months of prior experiences learning about the flourishing ways of the indigenous people as well as the motives, journeys and consequences of the arrival of new settlers, laid a foundation to explore the Salem witch narratives in a way that felt safe. We had to get a little goofy before we could get serious.

During our community Theme Time, students simulated a Trading Post between European settlers and natives, using specific items that might have been available to the two groups. In our simulation, each group decided what they needed, the value of items they were trading and their willingness to trade. While colonists and Native Americans co-existed for a short period of time, which included trading with each other for survival, eventually the relationship between the two groups degraded into warfare and the Native Americans never again had control of their ancestral lands. We will continue to unpack this hard history in the months ahead.
