Taking learning beyond the classroom in Advising and Supporting 🧠

During a two-week span in April, students dove into college student mental health through hands-on, creative work. From researching key issues and showcasing them in a Mental Health Issues Gallery, to designing interactive board games that promote positive support-seeking behaviors, this class is all about turning ideas into impact.

Game Day gave students the chance to test their creations with undergrads, gathering real feedback to refine their work and better address the needs of today's students 🎲

By combining research, creativity, and real-world application, these future Student Affairs professionals are learning how to spark meaningful conversations and create solutions that support student well-being.

Future teachers in math, science, English, social studies and agriculture stepped into the classroom this month as part of the Science Bound Summer Camp: Algebra Champion. On June 10 and 12 at North High School, M.A.T. students led rising eighth graders through hands-on, interdisciplinary lessons designed to spark curiosity and build confidence. Using the Notice & Wonder approach, they created an engaging environment where students explored concepts, asked questions and connected learning across subjects in meaningful ways.

Students in SpEd 4360 are getting real-world, hands-on experience through a collaborative case study 🤝📚 Alongside students in speech-language pathology courses, they worked through a scenario involving a kindergartener with academic and communication needs.

By coming together across disciplines, students gained a deeper understanding of IEPs, academic goals, communication devices, and how to support learners in the classroom 🧑‍🏫✨ Experiences like this show what it truly means to prepare future educators to meet every student where they’re at.

Students in HGED 5760: Student Development in Higher Education stepped outside the classroom for a “Theory in the Wild” experience 🌱📚 Working in groups, they explored student-serving spaces across campus, observing how environments, interactions, and everyday practices shape whether students feel welcomed, supported, and able to thrive.

By connecting these real-world observations to course concepts, students saw how theory can be used as a practical tool to better understand and improve campus experiences 🤝✨ Opportunities like this help prepare future student affairs professionals to lead with intention, reflection, and a strong commitment to student success.
