It’s Fun Fact Friday: This Day in History Edition!

On June 5, 1891, a Field Day was held in Iowa City. The events included tennis singles and doubles; baseball throw; track events; middle-weight boxing; and there were exhibitions in boxing, fencing, tumbling, the horizontal bars, and pyramid building. Due to bad weather, certain events were postponed for a week and were completed in Marshalltown.

It’s Fun Fact Friday!

The first creamery was constructed on campus in 1881 and it was where the Food Sciences Building presently resides. The building was in close proximity to the Farm House, near where cattle were housed on campus. A wood structure, the first creamery was very small and was probably only designed to handle fluid milk, along with a few value-added dairy products, most likely butter.

Never let it be said that history class can't be fun. Check out graduating senior Michael Keul's final project for Dr. Rutenberg's section of HIST 4890: The World at War on the Vietnam Wars. Everything you wanted to know (or not) about American soldiers' field rations in Vietnam. Real historical research, really funny.

Michael is taking his talents to the University of Illinois, Springfield, where he will pursue an MA in public history and work as a research assistant at the UIS Center for Lincoln Studies. Congratulations, Michael! (We hope your rations in grad school are better than hardtack.)
