It’s been a busy week at the Iowa State Fair — a team from the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, including fourth-year students Alex Webster, Isabel Coufal, Macy Moore, and Erin Kraeger, have been hard at work caring for the animals.

From the horse barn to the Animal Learning Center, their clinical rotation at the fair is an opportunity to put what they’ve learned at Iowa State into practice, caring for animals of all sizes.

“We’re doing a lot of hands-on learning, not only with the animals, but with the people too,” said Webster. “We’re experiencing a range of exhibitors, from little kids to high school students who are about to graduate and go to college, plus their parents — learning how to balance both treating the animal and the people as well is so valuable.”

As the executive director of the North Central Poultry Association and the Iowa Egg Council, alumna Breck Hunt (MEd ’11) helps share the stories of modern poultry and egg farming — and one of the best opportunities comes at the Iowa State Fair.

In addition to bringing back the iconic hard-boiled egg on a stick, this year, the two organizations also partnered to create one of the fair’s top 11 new foods, the Cajun Cluck ‘N’ Chaos at Cluck ‘N’ Coop. The new creation combines a Cajun-style chicken sandwich with a pickled egg garnish and pickle-flavored cotton candy.

As the number one egg-producing state in the nation, Iowa’s egg and poultry industries both play a crucial role in lifting up the state’s economy and rural communities.

“Beyond being fun fair foods, it gives us an opportunity to start conversations about the farmers, farm families, and industry professionals who work every day to provide safe, high-quality poultry and egg products,” Hunt said.

Iowa State alumnus Collin Clough (’23) always had a creative spark. The College of Design at Iowa State University helped him find the perfect outlet in industrial design, which led to his current career as a boot designer for Tecovas, an Austin-based western footwear brand.

Now, his days include intense creative sessions of pitching new ideas, adjusting prototypes, and factory visits to check on the production process.

“I give Iowa State’s College of Design a lot of praise,” he said. “There are a lot of things that I learned in design school from really cool professors that I still use to this day.”
