📢 New Episode Now Live! 📢

Today’s PigX episode features three guests discussing the similarities and differences between pork production in the United States and Brazil, along with strategies for managing risk in today’s industry while recognizing and acting on opportunities.

Dr. Anne De Lara and Dr. Matthew Turner discuss how labor, climate and ventilation challenges vary between Brazil and the United States, while underscoring their shared commitment to raising healthy pigs.

Brady Reicks, risk manager at Reicks View Farms, shares his perspective on risk management, drawing from his background in markets and his transition into farming. He discusses how protecting margins varies by operation and offers practical approaches producers can use to make marketing and business decisions with greater confidence rather than hesitation.

Iowa State University researchers are exploring how computer vision, sensors and data science can transform swine production, from automated weight estimation to early detection of health issues. The long-term goal: continuous identification and tracking of individual pigs, a breakthrough that could redefine precision management, animal welfare and genetic improvement.

With U.S. Department of Agriculture support, the team is now testing these technologies in commercial-like settings to better understand their reliability, return on investment and scalability for producers.

Last month, the Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa State University Meat Laboratory hosted a pork barbecue class in Ames.

Participants prepared a total of 10 different grilling methods and seasoning combinations on pork cuts such as pressa, Delmonico chops, ribeyes, country-style ribs, and porterhouse chops.

At the end of the workshop, participants reported new knowledge on grilling and pork products and were excited to return home and prepare a variety of pork cuts themselves.
