Absolute truth!

Spent part of this morning compiling "dangerous detours and seductive shortcuts" from Learning by Doing for an institute I'm doing in July. And I'm again reminded how amazingly good this resource is! So grateful for Rick, Bob and Becky, followed by Tom, Mike Mattos, and Anthony Muhammad in creating this Solution Tree gem for schools.

Jeannie Fulbright nails it here. When we reduce learning to test scores, we've fundamentally broken what education is supposed to do. Students stop asking "Why does this matter?" and start asking "Will this be on the exam?" Teachers stop teaching and start teaching to the test. The joy of discovery gets replaced by the anxiety of performance.

Real learning is about curiosity, understanding, and growth. It's about building minds that can think, question, and create — not machines designed to regurgitate information on a single day in April. The test becomes the goal instead of a measure of learning. That's backwards.

What would classrooms look like if we trusted that deep understanding naturally produces strong performance, rather than the other way around?
