The 4-H meat judging program allows youth to learn about the different cuts of meat along with the trimness and quality factors that affect the safety and taste of the meat products we consume.

The Iowa State University Meat Judging Team recently competed in their second fall contest - 2023 American Royal Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest hosted by Nebraska Beef, Omaha, NE. On this judging trip the team also practiced at Tyson Fresh Meats, Dakota City, NE and at the Loeffel Meat Lab located on the campus of the University of Nebraska Meat Lab, Lincoln, NE. The team finished in 8th place, and division results included: beef judging – 6th; overall beef – 7th; beef grading, placings, and specifications – 8th; reasons – 9th; and pork – 10th. Currently the team is preparing for the national championship – The International – hosted by Tyson Fresh Meats, Dakota City, NE. The International will be the team’s final contest and will be held in mid-November. Team members include: Jillian Anderson, Montgomery, IL; Kailey Clark, Grand Mound; Bridget Fisher, Wellman; Ashtyn Jolly, Lancaster, KS; Anna Nafziger, Wellman, Lacey Smith, Anamosa; and Keegan Zimmerly, Independence.

These Cyclones are your 2023 Champion and Reserve Champion Southeastern Teams! Congratulations!

The 2023 Cyclone Meat Judging Team has been busy preparing for the 2023 Southeastern this week! Wish them luck as they compete at Ohio State University today and the University of Kentucky tomorrow!

This past weekend the 2023 Cyclone Meat Judging Team competed at the 45th Annual Iowa State Meat Judging Contest. The team had a great outing and were 3rd Overall as well as 2nd in Beef Judging and Summer Sausage, 3rd in Beef Grading, Pork Judging, Lamb Judging, Specifications, Boneless Ham, Total Placings, and Reasons. Ashtyn Jolly was 3rd in Beef Grading, Sixth in Pork Judging, and 7th Overall. Keegan Zimmerly was 5th in Beef Judging and 6th Overall. Kristen Hubbard was 4th in Beef Grading and 10th Overall in the Alternate Division. Lacey Smith was 6th in Beef Grading and 9th Overall in the Alternate Division. Additionally, Dacia Schoulte placed 7th in the Alternate Division. Jonah Werth was named the High ISU Individual - Total Contest and was 5th in the Alternate Division.

The team is very excited to round out their spring season with a trip to the Southeastern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest.
