Growing More Than Lunch in Moab!

Our goal is to grow as much fresh produce as possible for our school kitchen. It is still a work in progress, but we are excited about the progress we are making!

Thanks to a grant, we received garden beds and an irrigation system. We did not have access to water at first, but we recently had a spigot installed. Our next step is filling the beds with organic matter and soil so we can begin planting.

In the meantime, Sam continues growing fresh lettuce in our indoor hydroponic garden. He is also growing marigolds alongside it. Even indoors, marigolds can be helpful because they discourage certain pests. They also add color and give students another plant to observe and learn about.

Sam has also placed buckets in the cafeteria so students can collect appropriate food scraps for our active hot compost pile. This helps reduce food waste while creating rich compost for our future garden beds.

Best of all, our hydroponic lettuce is back on the lunch menu today! We are excited to keep learning, growing, and finding ways to connect our students with the food they eat. 🥬🌼♻️

We are honored to be featured in the Uintah Basin Extension Update’s Community Partner Spotlight!

For the second year, Athenian eAcademy provided weekly summer meal boxes to children across the Uintah Basin. This program served approximately 1,000 children each week in Ballard, Fort Duchesne, and Vernal/Ouray.

A special thank you to Malynnda Hoffman for the incredible amount of work she put into making this program successful. We are so proud of our Child Nutrition team and grateful for the opportunity to serve children and families throughout our community!

Exciting things are growing in Moab! 🌱

Last year, we received a garden grant, and our plans are finally coming to life! This weekend, a water spigot will be installed in our outdoor garden space, and seeds are already sprouting in our hydroponic garden.

Our lunch manager Sam even created a compost sign and placed a bucket next to the trash. Now our students are saving their food scraps and helping create compost for the garden!

A huge thank you to Sam for helping our garden grow from the ground up! 💚♻️

August Menus Are Here!

A new school year is right around the corner, and we are excited to welcome everyone back!

Check out our August breakfast and lunch menus so your family can plan ahead. We are so happy to announce that breakfast will be FREE for all students again this year.

We look forward to serving nutritious meals and seeing our students back in the lunchroom!

Together, we served an incredible 165,690 meals to children throughout our communities!
