πŸ“š THIS DAY IN EDUCATION HISTORY β€” AUGUST 7

On this day in 1865, Bessie Locke was born in West Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Locke became an important figure in the history of early childhood education. In 1909, she founded the National Association for the Promotion of Kindergarten Education, which later became the National Kindergarten Association.

Her mission was to expand access to kindergarten and establish it as an important part of the public-school system. Through decades of advocacy, fundraising, and education campaigns, her organization helped contribute to the opening of thousands of kindergartens across the United States.

Today, kindergarten is an established part of early education for millions of children. Locke's work is a reminder that changes in education often begin with people willing to advocate for what they believe children need.

πŸ“š Today in Education History

On August 31, 1870, Maria Montessori was born in Italy. An educator, physician, and visionary, Montessori revolutionized education by developing a child-centered approach that encourages independence, curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning.

Her philosophy challenged traditional teaching methods by recognizing that every child learns differently and thrives when given the freedom to explore at their own pace.

Today, thousands of Montessori schools across the globe continue to inspire generations of learners, proving that empowering children with confidence and curiosity creates lifelong learners.

"The greatest sign of success for a teacher... is to be able to say, 'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'" β€” Maria Montessori
