Temple University Law Enforcement Training Center is thinking of the recruits and instructors injured this morning as they were out for their morning run.

Several recruits with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were injured when an SUV hit a group of runners near a sheriff's training academy in the Whittier area. The driver was detained.

The vehicle crashed into a group of 75 cadets running. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, 25 recruits were injured in the crash. All victims were taken to multiple hospitals in the area.

The driver was described as a 22-year-old Hispanic man from Diamond Bar by the California Highway Patrol.

"Tragedy struck our department," said Sheriff Alex Villanueva during a news conference Wednesday.

Five people were in critical condition, four suffered "moderate" injuries, and 14 suffered minor injuries, firefighters reported.

It is with profound grief that Temple University Law Enforcement Training Center announces the tragic passing of Crpl Brian Kozera. Brian taught physical fitness and defensive tactics at the Training Center. He touched so many with his passion for racing, teaching, helping others and with his positive attitude. He was making his dream a reality; to race Ironman Triathlon in Kona. He was on a bicycle training ride when he was killed. TLETC offers support, strength, and prayers for Brian’s wife, his three girls and his brothers and sisters in blue
