(MW, 10:30-11:45—16-week traditional class, Dr. William Netherton)
“Fæder ure þu þe eart on heofonnum . . .” Look familiar? This is how an English person would’ve said the Lord’s Prayer a thousand years ago. In English 2322, you’ll see how the English language and literature developed between 1000 and 1800 AD. We’ll read Beowulf, Chaucer, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Julian of Norwich and other medieval English spiritual writers, Shakespeare, and John Donne (among others). Come hang out with Vikings and men in tights. Contact info: [email protected]
English 2326: American Literature
(8-week hybrid class, the first 8 weeks—MW 9:00-10:15, Dr. Mary Dodson)
Yes—it is possible to enjoy a journey traveling through American Literature in 8 weeks! We will focus on the concept of American Romanticism and see how it comes alive in this country’s literature by looking at the topics of Faith, Freedom, and The Frontier. We will see how the American character is reflected in the thoughts of such writers as Jean de Crevecoeur, Mary Rowlandson, Phyllis Wheatley, Washington Irving, Kate Chopin, Jack London, and Mark Twain—to name just a few. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this hybrid course. Contact info: [email protected]
English 2331: Non-Western Literature—Online
(16-week online class, Dr. William Netherton)
Rumi. Tu Fu. Kalidasa. Mirabai. Shin-eki-uninni. Li Po. Tagore.
Great writers all. In English 2331, you’ll be introduced to these authors and several more. We’ll do a chronological survey of great pieces of literature from the Mid-East, India, and China. After taking this course, the next time someone starts gushing about the latest trendy novel, you can come back with, “Yeah, but have you read Jalal-al-din Rumi? Now, that guy can write.”
