The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Health Professions Doctor of Physical Therapy class in Amarillo hosted its third annual DPT Pickleball Tournament, bringing students, team members and community members together for a day of fun and friendly competition.

The tournament helped the DPT class raise funds for their white coat ceremony, a tradition marking students’ transition into the clinical phase of the program, while also bringing the community together in support of the next generation of healthcare professionals.

"Meet Lauren Barnett, MSN, RN, a 2026 Panhandle Great 25 honoree.

Lauren grew up surrounded by nurses, including a grandmother and great-aunt who served as a Navy nurse. Nine years into her own career, she now teaches future nurses at TTUHSC School of Nursing. Her goal is to help each student leave the classroom ready to care for patients with skill and compassion.

We look forward to honoring Lauren Barnett at the 10th Annual Panhandle Great 25 Nurses Celebration on November 5.

Flu shots are available at the Amarillo Pharmaceutical Care Center (APCC), located inside Texas Tech Physicians.

⚪Regular trivalent flu (Fluzone) for those 7 and older
⚪High-dose flu (Fluzone HD) for those 65 and older
⚪Egg-free flu (Flublok) for those 18 and older with egg or certain other allergies

Stop by for your immunization Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 5 p.m. APCC provides all vaccines and injections, excluding Provera. Don’t wait, roll up your sleeve and fight the flu this season!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of childhood cancer and the families who face it every day.

For Sawyer Robertson and his family, that journey began in March 2025 when he was diagnosed with leukemia. Since then, Sawyer has been receiving treatment at Texas Tech Physicians Pediatrics in Amarillo and continues to make his way toward recovery.

Having access to specialized pediatric cancer care right here in Amarillo has allowed Sawyer to receive the treatment he needs close to home. For his family, that has meant more time together and the support of their community throughout his treatment.

Sawyer’s story is a reminder of the importance of having expert pediatric cancer care available and close to home for families across the Texas Panhandle. This September, we recognize and help bring greater awareness to the impact of childhood cancer in our community.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Student Life hosted Red Raider Days in Amarillo giving students the opportunity to explore different campus resources, from financial aid and IT support to mental health services and the Student Government Association. In honor of National Physician Su***de Awareness Day (Sept.17), students and team members from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, along with the TTUHSC Student & Wellness Committee in Amarillo, hosted grand rounds with a keynote address focusing on physician burnout and wellness from Izi Obokhare, M.D., residency program director of the Department of Surgery.

After the presentation, attendees gathered for a wreath-laying ceremony to memorialize physicians and healthcare workers who have lost their lives to su***de. serves as a call to action, reminding us to begin conversations, recognize barriers and share resources that can help those in distress seek the care they need.

Physicians experience one of the highest su***de rates of any profession. Studies show that more than half of physicians know a colleague who has considered, attempted or died by su***de.
