The latest cohort of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing in Amarillo was honored with a lamp lighting ceremony. The tradition pays homage to Florence Nightingale, who is considered the mother and pioneer of nursing.

Starting this fall, Texas Tech Physicians OB+GYN will launch an enhanced prenatal care program through the CenteringPregnancy® model in partnership with Centering Healthcare Institute.

Texas Tech Physicians OB+GYN team members recently participated in training to prepare for this exciting addition to patient care. The CenteringPregnancy model combines prenatal health assessments, education and peer support, bringing together expectant moms who are due around the same time to learn, connect and build community throughout their pregnancy.

Texas Tech Physicians (TTP), the clinical practice of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, has reached an agreement with UnitedHealthcare® (UHC) Insurance Company. There will be no lapse in participation under the commercial and Medicare Advantage participation agreements with UHC since the effective date of the new agreement will be retroactive to April 1, 2026.

Patients covered by UHC can continue receiving care from TTP’s providers at Amarillo, Lubbock and Permian Basin clinic sites at in-network benefit levels. Patients with scheduled appointments do not need to take any action and should keep their appointments as planned.

Patients with questions about their coverage or benefits are encouraged to contact UHC’s customer service using the phone number listed on the back of their insurance card. For questions regarding services provided during the termination period, please visit TTP’s website at https://www.texastechphysicians.com/united-healthcare.aspx for updated information.

Each year, state agencies from the upper 26 counties in the Texas Panhandle are invited to select an employee or team to receive a Texans Caring for Texans award. This year, the providers from Texas Tech Physicians Surgery were honored for their exceptional work caring for the people of the Panhandle. M. Haris Nazim, M.D., and Izi Obokhare, M.D., accepted the award at a ceremony on Thursday.

The award recognizes the team's dedication to improving healthcare across the Texas Panhandle while also establishing a general surgery residency program at in Amarillo, educating the next generation of surgeons to care for communities across the region.

The award program, created in 1996 by former State Representative David Swinford, recognizes these state employees for their efforts to positively impact their communities.

The program brings together expectant women who are at a similar stage of pregnancy for group prenatal visits that combine health assessments, education and community support. By fostering connection and shared experiences, the program aims to empower families and improve health outcomes for expectant moms and babies in the Panhandle community.
