The three “meta-skills” of a great fighter are:

Timing-Position-Distance

Every martial artist or boxer etc, must have total mastery of each of these three areas, AND then they must get these three working together as a complete and unified whole.

Bruce Lee was a genius of utilising and applying the “meta-three”. He would adopt the best and most advantageous position, at just the right distance, until the optimum moment of timing arrived… then when it did, he struck with full speed and maximum power! Kerpow!!.. as Batman said.

Daily life is much the same… all of life revolves around these “meta-three”. Being in the right place, at the right distance and at the right time, IS the key to optimum performance in everything you do.

Observe your daily interactions and meetings, and plan them around these “meta-three” perceptions… check your position, your distance and timing… use them, and don’t let others use them against you!.. Be aware!

In one of her podcasts, Bruce Lee’s daughter Shannon, remembers a conversation she had whilst training with one of Bruce’s original students, Ted Wong. She said that Ted recalled that Bruce did not “teach” those he worked with, rather he “demonstrated”… then asked them to “replicate”.

Bruce learnt by rapid assimilation of what he witnessed… he saw and then absorbed the techniques, like sugar dissolving in a liquid. In the field of NLP we call this process “modelling”.

This in fact, is the natural way to learn, it’s the way of trusting the unconscious/subconscious mind to perform… the conscious mind starts the learning by focusing our attention… however the real learning and the artistry begins when the conscious mind gets out of the way and the deeper mind takes over!

A really good book on modelling is the book “Modelling with NLP” by Robert Dilts. A really good read that gives you a full outline of the whole topic.
