Alva High School This is the Alva high School OFFICIAL page We are the Goldbugs. THE HISTORY OF THE GOLDBUG

In 1923 Alva had a high school principal named J. Mr.

Allen Thomas who taught English. Thomas was a great admirer of Edgar Allan Poe. He especially liked “The Gold Bug.” Mr. Thomas conceived the idea of awarding beautiful paper goldbugs to outstanding students at annual honors banquets. The bugs, which were made by the high school students, went to those who were rated superior in their classwork and to those who were judged as being talented perform

ers in music, debate, dramatics, and other school activities. Students started calling their athletics team the GOLDBUGS, and the idea caught on. This tradition is continued today. The school mascot is the Goldbug- The Symbol of Excellence- in academic and extracurricular activities.

The cost is $40 until March 1st then it goes to $50.
If you want your name on it, you have to order online with an additional $5 cost.
Personalization deadline is March 15th. Online orders will close on March 30th.

Money turned in to the office MUST have this form filled out and attached.
