Northwestern visual arts minors Samantha Friday and Sydney Endsley will have paintings featured at The Art Hall gallery in Oklahoma City through August.

The Visual Arts Program at Northwestern Oklahoma State University is pleased to announce Visual Arts students Sydney Endsley and Samantha Fridays’ recent paintings inclusion in an exhibition at The Art Hall in Oklahoma City. This exhibition represents the culmination of a semester-long exploration of individual themes and methods within Associate Professor of Art, Kyle Larson’s Advanced Studio course. The exhibition was made possible through a collaboration with The Art Hall Director and independent curator, Helen Opper. Opening in the third week of May, the exhibition will continue to be on view through the summer, closing in August. If you find yourself in OKC this summer, make sure to see the show!

Sydney Endsley is a senior Speech/Theatre Major and Visual Arts Minor at NWOSU, graduating in May, 2022. She was born in Enid, Oklahoma and was raised in Drummond, Enid, and Ringwood Oklahoma. Sydney recently completed her Theatrical Senior Capstone which required her to design most aspects of a production of Pat Cook’s “Clockwork,” in addition to her duties as director. Sydney has also been involved in cosplay, which includes costume and makeup design. Sydney’s multi-media, heavily layered paintings explore horror, the grotesque, and notions of anguish and struggle.

Samantha Friday is a junior Psychology Major and Visual Arts Minor at NWOSU. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona and was raised in Lake Dallas, Texas. Her paintings utilize humor and exaggerations of color to depict figures immersed in precarious environments and psychological predicaments. Samantha has exhibited her work in Oklahoma and was recently featured in the OVAC Momentum 2022 Exhibition in Oklahoma City.

“The Art Hall is a nontraditional gallery space that opened in early 2016 on Northwest 23rd Street in the revitalized Uptown District of Oklahoma City. The Art Hall aims to support local artists by providing exhibition and sales opportunities, to increase the public's daily interaction with fine art, and to promote the appreciation of and relationships within the vibrant arts communities as well as with other local businesses and art workers in our growing city. The gallery provides a space for creative exploration, exchange, and collaboration with local artists, arts professionals, and the public. The Visual Arts Program at Northwestern Oklahoma State University is excited to announce our April 2022 Artist-in-Residence, Saba Farhoudnia.

Saba Farhoudnia was born in Tehran, Iran in 1987 and currently lives and works in New York City. Saba earned a Bachelor of Fine Art and a Master of Art from The University of Science and Culture in Tehran, Iran. She also received a second Masters of Fine Arts degree in Painting from the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

In her work, Saba merges drawing, painting, language, and verse through brushstrokes, geometric forms, calligraphy, and gestural marks to evoke drama, pain, humor, and beauty. The forms are intended to plumb the depths of the grotesque and elevate the humor in beauty.

About her work, Saba states:

The relationship between individuals and society has always occupied my mind. Therefore, with my work, I intend to open up the conversation on how constructs such as gender, race, culture, politics, economic systems, nationality, borders, migrations, etc. are the mainsprings of this relationship, and how people become victims of the systems they have themselves created. I would like to pinpoint how much it is a determinant in our time, and how escaping this predicament - mentally, emotionally and physically - is the only way to survive. This idea derives from my own experience of feeling alienated in my homeland, only to find myself homesick abroad.

Saba’s work has been exhibited across the Middle East, Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States. Her work can also be found in popular magazines such as Art Scope Magazine, Thalia Magazine, Studio Visit Magazine, and Words Without Borders. Saba is an alumnus of the Artist in the Marketplace fellowship program at The Bronx Museum of the Arts.

Saba began her residency at NWOSU on April 2nd and is developing a body of work in the Jesse Dunn Art Annex, room 323. A culminating exhibition of the work Saba creates at NWOSU will be presented towards the end of her stay, with times and location TBA.

In addition, Saba will present an artist talk and a drawing workshop titled “Hidden Layer” on Thursday, April 14. The Artist Talk, open to all, will start at 6:00 PM in Jesse Dunn 324. The workshop is limited to 12 spots, and will start at 7:00 PM in Jesse Dunn 327. Workshop Description: When two dots meet, they form a line; lines can represent letters or symbols or even remain as a straight line. They are the only fantastic tool for our drawings. In this workshop, we want to express our feelings and subconscious thoughts on paper to achieve our drawing language and, from the heart of an unconscious drawing, create something worth having on the wall for years.

The Visual Arts Program is excited to announce our February Artist-in-Residence, Renée Reizman.

Renée Reizman is an interdisciplinary curator, artist and writer specializing in social practice and civic engagement. Working within diverse communities, she studies the ways infrastructures shape our culture, policy, and environment.

She is currently the 2019 - 2022 Creative Catalyst, an Artist in Residence situated within the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, and a professor at Pepperdine University.

Renée has organized a number of exhibitions, performances, interactive installations, and workshops for organizations like Kolaj Institute, the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, The Feminist Center for Creative Work, 826LA, the University of California, Irvine, and Machine Project. She has exhibited work at Access Gallery (Vancouver, British Columbia,) the Irvine Fine Arts Center (Irvine, CA), Unit 5 Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), UCLA Broad Arts Center, California State University Long Beach, and the Museum of Human Achievement (Austin, TX). Her writing appears in Art in America, New York Magazine, The Atlantic, Vice, Teen Vogue, InStyle, Chicago Magazine, Slate, Hyperallergic, ARTNews, The Awl, and more. Renée has been an Artist in Residence at NAVEL, Art Farm, and the Museum of Human Achievement. Renée holds an MFA in Critical & Curatorial Studies at the University of California, Irvine.

Renée also holds an undergraduate degree in film + television + animation from Syracuse University. In a past life, she coordinated visual effects and postproduction for both live action and animated projects. Some of her credits include: Anomalisa, This Is The End, Veronica Mars, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Mad Men, and Revolution.

The Visual Arts Program, in collaboration with the Department of English, Foreign Language, and Humanities, is excited to announce our November Artist-in-Residence, Chelsea T. Hicks.

Chelsea T. Hicks (Osage, Pawhuska District) is an incoming Tulsa Artist Fellow and a Native Arts & Cultures Foundation 2021 LIFT Awardee. Her writing has been published in McSweeney’s, Yellow Medicine Review, the LA Review of Books, Indian Country Today, the Believer, The Audacity, The Paris Review, and elsewhere. She is a past Writing By Writers Fellow, a 2016 Wah-Zha-Zhi Woman Artist featured by the Osage Nation Museum, and a 2020 finalist for the Eliza So Fellowship for Native American women writers. In 2020, she was a Visiting Artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago after earning a master’s in English from UC Davis and an MFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts. Her advocacy work has included recruiting with the Virginia Indian Pre-College Outreach Initiative (VIP-COI), Northern and Southern California Osage diaspora groups, and heritage language creative writing and revitalization workshops. She authored poetry for the sound art collection Onomatopoeias For Wrangell-St. Elias, funded by the Double Hoo Grant at the University of Virginia, where she was awarded the Peter & Phyllis Pruden scholarship for excellence in the English major as well as the University Achievement Award (2008-2012). The Ford Foundation awarded her a 2021 honorable mention for promotion of Indigenous-language creative writing. She is planning an Indigenous Language Creative Writing Conference for November 2022 in Tulsa, funded by the Mid-America Arts Alliance.

On December 3rd, from 10 Am – 5 PM in Jesse Dunn, room 327, Hicks will conduct a workshop titled “Creating with Our Ancestors.”
