Back to school means back to football, volleyball, soccer and all the traditional school activities. And we LOVE that. ❤️

But not every kid finds their thing there. Some kids would rather wrestle around on the floor. Some want something they can work on at their own pace. Some aren’t interested in traditional team sports at all.

And sometimes the kid who hasn’t quite found where they fit walks onto a Jiu Jitsu mat and suddenly thinks…Oh. THIS is my thing.

If your child is still looking for theirs, we’d love to meet them.

🔥 Strategic BJJ - Alton COMPETITOR SPOTLIGHT: DAVE WOODS

If there was ever a case for ALWAYS BE READY… this is it. 😂🥋

Dave went to FUJI Springfield with absolutely no plans to compete. Then he found out there was a brown belt who had signed up but didn’t have an opponent.

And wouldn’t you know it…

Dave just happened to have his gi with him. 😂

Because apparently that’s the kind of thing you do when you’re a jiu-jitsu guy—carry a gi around just in case a tournament match suddenly breaks out. So Dave jumped in.
No tournament prep. No plan to compete that day. He simply had an opportunity to give another brown belt the match he came there hoping to have.

And since he was already out there…

Might as well take 1st place. 🥇😂

We love the gold, but we love the story behind it even more. Someone needed an opponent, Dave had a gi, and he was willing to step up.

Always. Be. Ready. 👊🔥

🔥 Strategic BJJ - Alton COMPETITOR SPOTLIGHT: STEVIE GRATTA

Some people compete with nerves. Stevie competes with a smile. 😂🥋

Stevie Gratta genuinely has FUN competing, and his matches at FUJI Springfield were a perfect example of why we love watching him out there.

Stevie and his opponent were laughing, joking and having a great time throughout their match—while simultaneously trying to submit each other. 😂

And apparently they both had the same idea…

FOOT LOCK. 🦶🔒

It turned into a race to see who could find one first, with both guys hunting for the finish.

Stevie won the race. 😏

He finished the day 1st place in the Adult No-Gi Division! 🥇

Great competition, great sportsmanship, and two competitors reminding everyone that you can compete hard, want to win, and still have an absolute blast with the person across from you.

That’s jiu-jitsu. 💙🖤

🔥 Strategic BJJ - Alton COMPETITOR SPOTLIGHT: NOLAN HOUSEHOLDER

This one was a comeback. 👊

Nolan Householder started his day at FUJI Springfield with a tough break—an accidental knee reap resulted in a DQ in his first match.

That could have easily gotten in his head and changed the rest of his day.

It didn’t.

Nolan reset, came back out for his next matches, trusted his game and kept competing.

By the end of the day, he had fought his way all the way back to the TOP OF THE PODIUM in the Adult No-Gi Division! 🥇

Competition isn’t always about everything going according to plan. Sometimes it’s about how you respond when it doesn’t.

Nolan responded by coming back and taking GOLD. 🥇🔥

That’s resilience.

Congratulations, Nolan! Way to shake it off, get back out there and finish the day on top.

🥋 Strategic BJJ - Alton COMPETITOR SPOTLIGHT: ANDY LUCKER

Sometimes the biggest win at a competition has nothing to do with where you land on the podium.

Andy Lucker had a couple of really tough rounds at FUJI Springfield. After his first match, he wasn’t even sure he had another one in him.

But when it was time for match #2, he stepped back onto the mat anyway.

He pushed through the exhaustion, kept fighting, and went the distance. 👊

And at the end of the day, Andy walked away with 2nd place in the Adult Gi Division. 🥈

That silver medal represents a whole lot more than a placement. It represents choosing to keep going when your body is telling you it would be easier to stop.

That’s something to be proud of.

Congratulations, Andy! You earned that one. 🥈🔥

First competition. First time stepping onto the tournament mats. First piece of hardware! 🔥

Dylan Woods competed in his very first BJJ tournament at FUJI Springfield, taking on the Adult Gi Division and coming home with 3rd place! 🥉

There’s a big difference between training in the gym and stepping onto the mat at a tournament for the first time. You don’t really know what to expect until you do it—and Dylan got out there, tested his game, gained some valuable competition experience, and earned himself a spot on the podium.

Not a bad way to start your competition career! 👊

Congratulations, Dylan! We’re excited to see what you do with everything you learned from this one.
