Our dear friend, jazz drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath, died on April 3, 2024 just a month shy of his 89th birthday. Tootie and his older brothers Percy and Jimmy comprised one of the greatest American musical families of the 20th Century.

Along with his wife Beverly, an Art Aids Art founding board member, Tootie joined us at the 2007 christening of The Boat, a community art space and our first major project in Khayelitsha, South Africa. While in Cape Town, Tootie conducted a master class for emerging musicians as part of the Cape Town Jazz Festival. Committed to education, for over 30 years Tootie taught at Stanford Jazz Workshop, where our daughter Chloe joined him for 3 summers.

We remember Tootie for his sublime artistry, for the musical wisdom that he shared with several generations of young musicians, and for his irrepressible spirit and uniquely mischievous sense of humor.

Art Aids Art remembers Siphokazi Macupe, a compassionate, caring, creative teacher, team player, community protector, and woman of faith and family. She made a deep commitment to creating a brighter future for her country, and touched the lives of many. She will be missed.

Thank you to the members of our extended family who were present to celebrate her beautiful life.

South Africa has the biggest and most high profile HIV epidemic in the world, with an estimated 7.1 million people living with HIV in 2016 (source: UNAIDS).
