At least some states have leaders who will not be bought unlike Utah with Governor Gary "Available Jones" Herbert who will say and do anything as long as the money keeps flowing.

Remember the words of Lincoln and Gettysburg: "that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey fired lobbyists who contract with various state boards and commissions, saying he was ending a system where "lobbyists get richer" at the expense of taxpayers.

How are we going to find enough teachers for our schools?

The recent flareup over teacher certification with the Utah State Board of Education and Representative Briscoe highlights the politics of how the teacher's union manipulates issues for their own advantage instead of acting in the best interest of schools, families and education.

In a perfect world, certification and training of our teachers is the best approach. The USBE, however, must deal with a less than perfect world where there simply are not enough teachers to fill the need. School principals annually must deal with the shortage of teachers in our state. This ploy by Rep. Briscoe, who works for teachers union, is meant to embarrass the USBE who have no other choice but to relax teacher requirements. School starts in less than two months and we need teachers, even if they are not fully certified.

The Utah House Democratic Caucus is demanding a public hearing on a Utah State Board of Education rule creating an alternative path to teacher certification.

Jonathan Johnson may have lost an election last night but did he win a movement? The David v. Goliath battle that was this Republican primary race ended with Herbert the winner. But to beat Johnson, Herbert had to change a number of stubbornly held positions that are not part of what the Republican party stands for in Utah. After six years of Common Core and SAGE testing, implemented during Herbert's terms of office, Johnson's candidacy forced Herbert to abandon a national Common Core, eliminate the SAGE test and preach the virtues of local control - exactly what Johnson would have done had he been elected! Johnson's campaign also forced the governor to get serious about state control of protected lands. Again, a movement toward local control. Now that the election is over, we will find out if the many political promises he made in order to win, will emerge as the real theme of his candidacy. I hope Governor Herbert is true to his word. Time will tell. I thank and congratulate Jonathan for his efforts and look forward to seeing if the movement has really changed Herbert and the Republican party in Utah.

Something to be said for Johnson who has worked his tail off over the last year canvassing the state for a job that will pay him less money and cause more grief than you can imagine. Johnson models the idea sought by the Founding Fathers- that of a citizen-statesman who serves the public good for a short time before returning to private life having made our world a better place.

Today is election day! Positioned between the two most patriotic days in America - Flag Day (June 14) and Independence Day (July 4), Utahans are invited to participate in the Democratic process that so many Americans have have fought and died for. I hope that all will take this invitation seriously and not allow the lazy days of summer distract them from their duty to vote.
