Montessori Canyon Academy offers an engaging and developmentally appropriate environment for children ages 2 months to 6 years. Children are placed in multi-aged classrooms based on their ability and development, rather than strictly by age. Children will progress through the curriculum at their own rate and learn according to their specific interests and abilities. Classes are offered Monday thro

Toddler (18 mos.-3 years)
In this early stage, we maintain small class sizes and a 1:4 teacher/child ratio to promote an intimate and safe environment. The emphasis is on creating a warm, loving and caring atmosphere in which children can adapt easily to new social interactions with both peers and adults. The toddler classroom abounds with child-sized furniture. The Montessori work is within their reach. Having access to these materials fosters confidence as they choose their own work. The children also enjoy music, dancing, finger plays, and various art experiences. A favorite in the toddler classroom is practical life. This is the age where they begin to crave independence. A child of this age becomes absorbed in the task of putting items in containers, closing them, and taking them out again. They are anxious to learn how to wipe a table, how to pour from one pitcher to another, and how to use tongs to transfer objects from bowl to bowl. The beginning of the language arts curriculum starts here. Children develop phonemic awareness (the knowledge that words are made up of sounds) through verbal games with their teacher. Once they understand that words are made up of sounds they begin to connect those sounds to their symbols through the introduction of sandpaper letters. By tracing the sandpaper letters with their fingers they are entering the beginning stages of letter formation, writing. At this stage, the children are exposed to basic math concepts. An emphasis is placed on recognizing quantities and the numerical symbol that corresponds. Many of their music and movement games also incorporate math concepts. Our Toddler program options are as follows:
Half-day schedule 9 a.m.-12 p.m. School day schedule - 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Full-day schedule - 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Pre-Kindergarten- 1st grade (3-7 years)
The Montessori method is used to help children grow socially, emotionally and cognitively. This classroom is structured with multiple work areas to facilitate ongoing curricular objectives. They will continue to develop their self confidence by working at their own pace. They also choose their own materials and the teacher observes and assesses the child's progress to decide which new materials should be introduced. Our curriculum materials reach through the third grade level, allowing for advanced-level learning in math, reading, language, science, geography, and culture studies for those who are ready for it. It’s wonderful to see an older child guiding the younger the ones and looking out for them like a family member. In contrast, the younger children watch the older children work on more challenging work and long for the time when they too, can accomplish those same tasks. This fosters a sense of community rather than competition within the classroom. You can witness children working side by side, one just beginning to connect an object with its beginning sound, and the other quietly writing a paragraph about something new they have learned. Pre-K-1st grade program schedule is as follows:
Half Day Morning 8:30 am-11:30 am
Half Day Afternoon 12:30 pm-3:30 pm

The Montessori method introduces letters by sound rather than by name. They are introduced a few at a time and in a particular order to build “phonemic awareness.” This is an essential skill for building language, and helps the child learn to hear and identify the smallest units of sounds in spoken words. He is also learning to match objects that begin with those particular sounds. All of these are essential precursors to reading.
