Juneteenth Holiday🖤

Juneteenth is a time to celebrate freedom, culture, and the powerful contributions of African American history and artistry. Music has always played an important role in telling stories, bringing communities together, and inspiring change. From jazz and blues to gospel, classical, hip-hop, and beyond, Black musicians and composers have shaped the sound of music across generations. This Juneteenth, we honor the incredible artists whose creativity, talent, and influence continue to inspire musicians around the world.

🎹Art Tatum- A jazz piano virtuoso whose incredible technique and improvisation transformed jazz music. His innovative playing style inspired countless pianists and established him as one of the greatest musicians in jazz history.

🎸Chuck Berry - Considered one of the pioneers of rock and roll. His energetic guitar style, songwriting, and stage presence helped shape modern popular music and influenced generations of musicians across many genres.

🎻Florence Price - Making history as the first African American woman to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra. Her music beautifully blended classical traditions with African American spirituals and folk influences, leaving a lasting impact on classical music.

🎶Kendrick Lamar - Known for his powerful storytelling, lyrical creativity, and influence on modern hip-hop. As one of the most celebrated artists of his generation, he has used music to highlight social issues, culture, and identity, inspiring audiences around the world.

🎤Michael Jackson - Often called the “King of Pop,” changed the music industry forever with his groundbreaking performances, iconic dance moves, and record-breaking albums. His influence on pop music, music videos, and live entertainment continues to inspire artists today.

🎼William Grant Still - kKnown as the “Dean of African American Composers,” broke barriers in classical music through his symphonies, operas, and orchestral works. His achievements opened doors for future generations of Black composers and musicians.

She has a genuine appreciation for music from around the world and believe that every culture, rhythm, and sound brings its own unique beauty and magic. When asked for her best advice to students, one word came to mind: consistency. She encourages students of all ages to practice a little every day. Even just 10 minutes or one line at a time, because small daily improvements can lead to incredible leaps over time.

🎹Student of the Month: Sophie Stone 🎹

Meet, Sophie Stone, our proud Student of the Month! Having played piano for just nine months, she has already shown incredible dedication and enthusiasm for music. Her love for music and longtime dream of learning an instrument inspired her to begin her piano journey. She is especially inspired by Taylor Swift because of her talent and the songs she loves so much. Classical music is her favorite genre to play, and she especially enjoys performing “Three Green Men from Outer Space.” One of her proudest accomplishments so far has been learning to play piano with both hands, an exciting milestone that reflects all of her hard work and progress.

What is a kalimba? 🎶
The kalimba—often called a “thumb piano”—is a traditional African instrument in the lamellophone family, meaning it produces sound from vibrating metal tines. It originated from instruments like the mbira, which have been played for centuries in countries such as Zimbabwe.

Here’s what makes it unique:
• Structure: A wooden soundboard with attached metal tines of varying lengths
• How it works: Each tine is tuned to a specific pitch and plucked with the thumbs
• Tuning: Commonly set to a C major scale, but can be retuned to other keys
• Sound: Soft, bell-like tones with natural resonance

The kalimba is widely used in music education because of its accessibility—many players can learn simple songs quickly without prior experience. It’s also popular in music therapy and mindfulness practices due to its calming sound and repetitive playing patterns.

A small instrument with a long cultural history and a growing role in modern music.
