Teenagers can be so insightful. An interesting read about whether or not parents are doing too much.
What Teenagers Are Saying About Modern Parenting
Students react to an essay about the relentlessness of raising children today, and share how involved they think parents should be.

This is one of our hard-working students, who is learning how to plan and schedule long-term assignments. As adults, we might take for granted the fact that we know how to break a task up into manageable chunks, and then schedule the tasks so we're not rushing or spending 8 hours in one day cramming. Being able to learn this skill in high school and practice it in a no-stakes environment is invaluable.
The "New Assignment Plan" (credit to Tera Sumpter) asks the student to: 1. write it. 2. plan it. 3. Schedule it. Do you know how many executive functioning skills he had to learn before he was ready to tackle this one?
The answer may surprise you.
Non-verbal working memory (NVWM): "Holding" and "imagining" his future/hypothetical self and assignment, and then seeing himself "walk" through the steps to completion.
Time sense: Determining how much time he would likely need to complete each step.
Anticipating: Making sure he'd have all the materials needed to complete the assignment.
Prioritizing: He scheduled "buffer" days on Saturday and Sunday, assuming those days he would not be working on his assignment. Once he realized 9 days wasn't enough time to finish reading the book and write the 3-paragraph book report, through prioritizing, he removed Sunday as a buffer day, giving himself 2 extra days of reading time.
Balancing: By breaking up the assignment across multiple days, he's able to balance all his other school and personal priorities.
Decision-making: THIS is one of the hardest skills for this particular student, so I was especially impressed by the amount of decisions he made to accomplish this task.

One of our incredible students got a bracelet maker for her birthday and made bracelets with the names of her favorite books and book characters! We're patiently waiting for her to make us a bracelet or two. 😍
