From today’s group class with Ms. Corina. In this video, she is reading “Mile’s Music.” In Portuguese. No, none of us speaks Portuguese besides Ms. Corina, but we understand music as language and we wanted kids to immerse in tone, gesture, speed and dynamics of the language. Last lesson I read it in Japanese and next lesson, I have a parent who speaks Farsi.

Auditions are always for self competition, not with others.
For this Mozart Divertiment excerpts, we worked on how to make this easy looking but actually difficult music sound effortless. Also we tried and tweaked many ways of articulation and dynamics, comparing Mozart’s Opera writing. I like stepping into past and imagine with my students the sound back then, and sound we want to make now.
Congratulations, Mei and Satomi!!

Hi Students! Hope you are enjoying your summer. I am practicing Vocalise by Rachmaninoff for a concert on September 24 with an organist Debra Dickensheets and Zac Lavender, cellist. Vocalise is a simple song but a lot to think about!! How am I opening up this song simply, and getting into deep emotion, sometimes shy away, sometimes deeply immerse in it?? How do I repeat and give a different meaning to a same melody? ( I start thinking about it but not delved I to it today. Not yet.)
Here is a snippet of my practicing , thinking about which finger gives me what kind of texture, experimenting with speed of vibrato. Do I intensify phrasing by speed of the bow or vibrato? Can you tell?
