It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my friend and fellow yoga teacher, Retha Cazel. Retha was the owner of Yoga and More in Corning, where I taught public classes and as part of the faculty of her teacher training course. She was instrumental in helping me to establish my yoga following when I first moved here from NJ, but more than that she was my friend. Rest, sweet Retha, and know that you are in our hearts.

Many thanks to all who came today. What a lovely group! It was lovely to see some old friends, and to meet some new friends. Hope to see you soon! Perhaps on the 19th, when I'll be offering, along with some other instructors from the Alfred area, a fundraiser class for the ACC Fund for Women. Stay tuned for details!

Namaste, friends! So, some of you may not know this, but I recently had knee surgery (nothing major--just some trimming of minor tears in my meniscus and some frayed cartilage). I haven't returned to running yet (sad face) but I have returned to my yoga practice and it has been, well, interesting. I've been gently breaking up the newly formed scar tissue by careful transitions between bending and straightening, and I've made excellent recovery in terms of range of motion, though some poses--weight-bearing directly on the knee, and any seated pose with the knee bent and the leg externally rotated, for example--are only beginning to become available to me again. But, such is the practice--every day is a new body, change is the only constant, and even the most flexible among us still have to do their laundry after they roll up their mat.
One thing I have always said is that the best thing that can happen to a yoga teacher is to get injured--you are forced into a beginner's mindset, and you have to become creative, resourceful, and ever mindful of your movements and transitions. Those of you who have been with me for years know that I have learned this lesson again and again and again and again and... well, you get the picture. (For a yoga teacher, I'm awfully clumsy, haha). I'm happy to say that yoga is feeling absolutely ah-maaaaazing on my knee right now, and my knee is having a pretty cool effect on my practice.
It's all part of the bigger picture, I suppose, as this fall we are getting together, you and I, for a workshop on mindful transitions. I've been thinking about that concept a lot these past few months, and then the universe goes and hands me some fresh clay to work with. Funny how life works out.
I hope you can join me at the end of October. Come as you are! Together, we'll set down that heavy mental load for a bit and smooth out the wrinkles in the space between poses and maybe carry a little of that grace back into the real world. Maybe we catch a glimpse of nirvana along the way, and then after, as the saying goes: the laundry.
Peace.

Interesting read for my regular students and my teacher trainees--why I typically don't have a mixed level (or beginner) class transition between W1 and W2, or other external vs neutral poses. There is value in that transition if it can be done with stability and without collapse, but that takes time to develop, and should be done purposefully (but really, all your sequencing should be done purposefully!).

[Disclaimer:  This post has caused quite a social media frenzy.  That’s great and it means people are learning and communicating. However, I have concern that some people are now planning to omit this movement from everyday life.  I am merely explaining why this transition is discouraged by so man...

Yes, to all of this.

Yes, to all of this.

A few years ago, I was approached by a photographer who wanted to work with me. In preparation for our shoot, I was presented with a portfolio of postures to consider. As I swiped through my options, I had no choice but to respond with, “Nope, can’t do that one. And, nope, can’t do that one either.”...
