Why is recertification important?
www.tenmilerescue.com
When was the last time you used your rescue skills in an emergency?
When was the last time you practiced your rescue skills?
These are 2 basic questions that should be reflected on when considering why recertification is important for rescue skills.
You might wonder how long are the rescue skills you learned retained???
For CPR/AED it is only a matter of months before your skill set deteriorates.
"The quality of rescuer education and frequency of retraining are critical factors in improving the effectiveness of resuscitation.”
Most certifications for CPR/AED are for 2 years and these skills decline within months of your training.
Ten Mile Rescue recommends that you practice your skills often and recertify every 2 years at a minimum. We offer Red Cross First Aid, CPR/AED as an initial class and as a recertification class. Remember that it is not only refreshing what you have learned. Recertification also includes updates on new skills, techniques and protocols.
What about other rescue skills?
Do I need to have recertification with Swiftwater Rescue?
What about Wilderness First Responder?
The answer is Yes!
Remember that practice makes perfect. Practice improves your skills and helps improve muscle memory with these skills.
Don’t sell yourself short in your rescue education! You should take classes that require and provide recertification. Take courses that follow standard industry guidelines, like certifications that only last for 2 years for CPR/AED and Wilderness First Responder and 3 years for Swiftwater Rescue.
The promise of a certification that never expires or lasts longer than the industry standard only provides a false sense of security. Remember that when your rescue skills are needed it is important to be prepared. The life you save could be one of your family or friends.
