🚲 Alliance Police Department — Community Reminder 🚲
Hey Alliance! With warmer weather on the way, we want to remind everyone about our city ordinance covering bicycles, electric bicycles, electric scooters, minibikes, and golf cart vehicles on city streets.
We've received numerous complaints about unsafe riding — especially involving e-bikes and younger riders. We're asking all residents, particularly parents and guardians, to review these rules and have a conversation with your kids about safe riding.
Here's what you need to know:
Follow the rules of the road. If you're riding a bike, e-bike, or e-scooter on the street, you have the same rights AND responsibilities as drivers.
Stay to the right. If you're moving slower than traffic, ride near the right-hand curb or edge of the street.
Sidewalk riding? You must yield to pedestrians at all times.
No extra passengers. Don't carry more people than the device is designed for.
Don't hitch rides. Never attach yourself or your device to a moving vehicle.
Keep a hand on the handlebars. At least one hand must be on the handlebars at all times.
E-bikes are NOT allowed in City parks — including walking paths and park areas.
E-bikes and bicycles are NOT allowed on the sidewalks in the Downtown Business District.
E-scooters are NOT allowed at night.
Lights are required at night. Bikes and e-bikes need a front light visible from 500 feet and a red rear reflector or light.
Brakes are required. Your bike or e-bike must be able to stop within 25 feet at 10 mph on dry pavement.
Minibikes, dirt bikes, golf carts, riding mowers, and similar vehicles are NOT allowed on city streets — except during public emergencies or authorized parades.
📣 Parents & Guardians:
E-bikes and e-scooters can reach 20+ mph. Young riders MUST understand and follow traffic laws just like drivers do. Violations can result in enforcement action. Please take a moment to talk to your kids about riding safely and responsibly.
E-Bike Classifications:
Class 1: Assists only while pedaling — max 20 mph
Class 2: Assists with or without pedaling — max 20 mph
Class 3: Assists only while pedaling — max 28 mph
Our officers will be out this spring and summer conducting both education and enforcement. We want everyone — motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians — to be safe on our streets and sidewalks.
