Benjamin F. Barge (1832–1902) – Pennsylvania Educator & PhilanthropistThis Benjamin Barge (often recorded with the middle initial "F") was a noted East Coast educator, reformer, and traveler.Early Life & Career: Born in Lockport, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Yale University in 1857. He went on to become a teacher and served as the president of the Philomatheon Institute in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania.Southern Reforms: He moved south and instituted major structural reforms to regional school systems, including establishing his own seminary in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.Philanthropy & Legacy: He was renowned for his later-life philanthropy, which included funding relief for victims of the historic Johnstown Flood and establishing college scholarship funds. He endowed the prestigious Benjamin F. Barge Oratorical Prize at Lafayette College and a math prize at Yale University. He passed away in Germany in 1902, and a massive 100-foot-tall, 80-ton monument stands in Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe), Pennsylvania, in his honor.
