If you could change one thing about your child’s learning experience this school year, what would it be?

More confidence?

Better grades?

Less homework stress?

Stronger study habits?

Better test preparation?

More motivation?

There is no wrong answer. Every family starts from a different place, and knowing what you want to improve is a good place to begin.

Tell us your answer in the comments.

Then, if you are ready to talk about your child’s specific needs, visit diverseilearning.com and explore the assessment and academic support options available through Diverse Interactive Learning.

Your answer might also help another parent realize they are not alone.

Parent: “Did you study for the test?”

Student: “Yes.”

Parent: “What did you study?”

Student: “Everything.”

Parent: “Can you explain one thing?”

Student: “...”

We have all seen some version of this.

Studying is not just about spending time with a textbook. Students need opportunities to practice, explain concepts, identify mistakes, and use what they have learned.

So the next time your child says, “I studied,” ask:

“Show me one thing you learned.”

What is the funniest “I studied” moment you have experienced at home?

Tell us in the comments.

Want a quick way to check whether your child understands a lesson?

Ask them to explain it back to you without looking at their notes.

If they can explain the idea in their own words and walk through an example, that gives you a much better indication of understanding than simply asking whether they finished the worksheet.

If they get stuck, that is useful information too. Now you know what needs another explanation or more practice.

Try it with one concept tonight.

Then come back and tell us: Did your child explain it easily or get stuck?

Try changing one question during homework tonight.

Instead of asking:

“Do you understand?”

Ask:

“Show me how you would solve the first one.”

Why?

A student may say “yes” because they think they understand, want to move on, or are embarrassed to admit they are confused.

Asking them to demonstrate their thinking gives you more useful information. You can see where they are confident and where they may need another explanation.

It also turns homework into a conversation instead of an interrogation.

Save this post and try the question tonight.

Let’s settle a very real parent question.

When does homework usually happen in your house?

A. Right after school
B. After dinner
C. Whenever everyone finally remembers
D. It depends on the day

There is no perfect schedule for every family. The important part is creating a routine your child can actually follow consistently.

A predictable homework time can make it easier for students to know when to focus, when to take a break, and when they are finished.

Which one sounds most like your household? Comment A, B, C, or D.

And if homework routines are becoming a daily struggle, visit diverseilearning.com to explore our academic support options.

Have you ever wondered, “Is my child really struggling, or are they just having a bad week?”

That can be difficult for parents to tell from homework alone.

Look for patterns instead. Is your child repeatedly avoiding one subject? Taking much longer than expected to complete work? Struggling with concepts they previously understood? Becoming frustrated when asked to explain their thinking?

One difficult assignment does not tell the whole story. Repeated patterns can be worth investigating.

That is where an academic assessment can help. Instead of guessing, you can get a clearer picture of your child’s strengths, gaps, and next steps.

What is the first sign that makes you wonder your child may need extra support? Tell us in the comments.
