Our new class of Bearcats have arrived! The class of 2030 spent last week getting to know campus, the resources at GVSU, their advisors and peers, and having some fun! We visited the GVSU Esports lounge, did a scavenger hunt around campus, many icebreakers, and went to see the West Michigan Whitecaps play. After a great week, we’re feeling prepared and confident to take on classes this semester 💪🏼📚✏️🎓📖

In June, the Battle Creek Scholars team had the privilege of attending the Every Child Thrives Festival hosted by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation at the Obama Presidential Center.

The festival brought together changemakers, advocates, educators, and community leaders from around the world who share a common commitment to creating brighter futures for young people. Through inspiring conversations, innovative ideas, and meaningful collaboration, we were reminded of the power of investing in youth and building communities where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

We returned to Grand Valley energized and inspired, carrying new ideas and a renewed commitment to our student-centered work with the Battle Creek Scholars Program, applying what we learned to continue supporting and empowering our Scholars as they pursue their educational and career goals.

Thank you to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for creating such a meaningful and impactful experience. We are grateful to be part of a community dedicated to ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Kaijehl Williams, a senior Battle Creek Scholar majoring in Allied Health Sciences and pursuing Physician Assistant Studies after graduation, had the opportunity to share his story at the Black Boys and Men National Symposium hosted in Battle Creek this June.

A longtime advocate for expanding access to healthcare for underserved communities, Kaijehl has advanced this passion through his internship with Bronson Healthcare in Battle Creek and his work as a Medical Scribe in a pediatric unit at Corewell Health in Grand Rapids.

Beyond his professional experiences, Kaijehl has fostered a strong sense of belonging for students of color at GVSU as the Founder and President of Mental Health in Minorities at GVSU, a dedicated Resident Assistant, Battle Creek Scholar Peer Mentor, and Chapter Vice Basileus of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Thank you, Kaijehl, for all that you do, and congratulations on your many achievements. Your perseverance, leadership, and commitment to serving others continue to strengthen and inspire your Battle Creek and Grand Valley communities.

This past Saturday was a night full of love, celebration, and so many proud moments 🎓💙

We had the honor of celebrating our 12 graduating seniors and recognizing our amazing scholars who made the Deans List, our dedicated peer mentors, and our top 10 most engaged students. Seeing everyone be recognized and celebrated was truly so special 🥹.

A HUGE thank you to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and BCPS staff for coming out to support us, and to all the friends and families who showed up with so much love—it meant everything 🤍!!

To our seniors and scholars, we are beyond proud of you. Your hard work, growth, and dedication do not go unnoticed. This is only the beginning, and we can’t wait to see all that you accomplish 💫🎓⚓️
