SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY- June 12th, 1898: Filipino rebels led by Emilio Aguinaldo proclaim independence from over 300 years of Spanish rule. During the Spanish-American- and Cuban War (most U.S. histories leave the Cubans out of this war in order to probably conceal the fact that the U.S. had designs for Cuban exploitation and did not support Cuban independence) the Filipino rebels with the help of U.S. forces ousted the Spanish, but after the U.S. initiated imperialist policy by attempting to take over the Philippines. Horrible fighting resulted from the fighting between the U.S. and the rebels. Including the use of concentration camps by U.S. forces to bring misery to the Filipino people (N***s' weren't the only ones who had camps). Unfortunately for the Philippines, their independence was not given to them until 1946. This episode in History should cause us to think very critically about U.S. foreign policy and the fact that U.S. actions have gone against our supposed "freedom" ideology since the writing of the Declaration of Independence. R.I.P. to Ray Bradbury who gave us such mezmerizing literature as Fahrenheit 451 and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He made people think about the future and did his best to write about the horrors of totalitarianism and the power of love. Today is the recall election to oust union-busting govenor Scott Walker in Wisconsin. The democratic challenger is Tom Barret (the mayor of Milwuakee). This is not a political page to reveal my personal opinion on politics, but a component of Mr. History Tutor is helping people get informed on influential issues so look up this recall election, which is only the third one in history for a govenor and increase your civic and social awareness. What stared out as a grassroots movement to oust a govenor ignoring the majority of Wisconsinians is ending up as a cash cow for political consulltants and for companies who are now allowed to throw millions of dollars into the political arena with the passing of the super pac bill (making it legal to have business and speacial interests directly involved in giving money to a candidate. The attached article from the very credible and unbiased Huffington Post breaks down the involvement of money in politics and the Wisconsin recall election.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/05/political-consultants-2012-campaign-big-money_n_1570157.html?ref=topbar

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: June 4th, 1989- The Tiananmen Square massacre occured as a result of pro- democracy students protesting against the harsh communist Chinese government. Thosands of students in hopes of creating an oppurtunity for the Chinese government to follow the democratic reform measures of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev were brutally assulated by Chinese authorities, killing and arresting hundreds. I like to think that most informed citizens are aware of this event, but people rarely ever truly take the time to realize the significance of historical events like this one to inform themselves in ways to make them not just a better citizen, but a better person. Follow the link to read further about the massacre and the extent of the human experience.http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/tiananmen-square-massacre-takes-place
