An initiative of school districts throughout Kent, Muskegon and Ottawa Area ISDs in partnership with GVSU. The mission of West Michigan Teacher Collaborative is to ensure all students in Kent, Muskegon and Ottawa Area ISD’s have excellent teachers. We seek to be a model of high-quality educator preparation and development who reflect the rich diversity of our students. We believe great teachers can dramatically impact the lives of students, families and the communities they serve.

Here’s what residency looks like as a member of WMTC.

Getting into teaching can come with barriers. Through our cohort-based Residency Program, we aim to develop teachers who love what they do and classrooms that reflect that.

WMTC is back in the classroom!

A new school year is underway, and our WMTC residents and fellows are stepping back into classrooms across West Michigan for Fall 2026!

From first-day outfits and classroom setups to family send-offs (and a familiar goose), we loved getting a glimpse into the start of the school year from members of our WMTC community.

We’re excited to see what this year brings. Wishing all of our residents, fellows, educators, and school communities a great year ahead!

Meet Fabiana Castro!

Fabiana recently the WMTC team supporting Operations & Grant Finance, bringing more than 11 years of experience in higher education, grant-funded programs, and student support.

With a background in grant administration, operations, and data management, Fabiana is passionate about building organized systems that support meaningful outcomes. At WMTC, she helps support grant operations, financial processes, and program coordination as we continue working to inspire, prepare, and support future educators across West Michigan.

Originally from Florida, Fabiana recently relocated to West Michigan with her family. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, spending time with her husband and two sons, and celebrating her Mexican heritage.

We’re so happy to have you on the team, Fabiana.

Meet the Future of Education in West Michigan!

We are excited to introduce West Michigan Teacher Collaborative Cohort 3 Residents!

These future educators are beginning their journey toward earning a graduate teaching certificate through Grand Valley State University while serving in schools across Kent, Ottawa, and Muskegon counties.

Throughout the program, they will:
Gain hands-on classroom experience.
Complete graduate-level coursework.
Learn alongside experienced mentor teachers.
Prepare to make a lasting difference in the lives of students throughout West Michigan.

At WMTC, we know that strong schools begin with strong teachers. We are honored to support this outstanding group as they take the next step toward becoming the educators our communities need.

Please join us in welcoming Cohort 3 and wishing them success as they begin this exciting journey!

West Michigan Teacher Collaborative was featured on eightWest!

We are now accepting applications for our Residency program.

Have a bachelor's degree and want to teach in West Michigan? This program is for you! Our Residency program includes student teaching in a public school and a stipend of up to $20,000 along with waived tuition, books and fees for program participants.
