What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a programming competition that typically lasts between 24 to 72 hours. It combines the words hack and marathon. In this time span, students compete to create the best program they can make. There is really no restriction on how creative a team of students can get.

Ari Vaniderstine defines a hackathon as "an event that provides the conditions (support, time pressure, hype, tools, resources, teammates, etc) to allow people to expand their knowledge of technology, create new things, build confidence in their abilities, and meet like-minded people, and then to inspire them to continue to be active in technology."
