The GVSU Laker Marching Band stands with the University of Iowa and the loved ones of Derek Phillips in mourning of his tragic passing on September 8, 2026.

Many join marching band for their love of the art, the joy of the performance, and for the school spirit. While these are all true in the begin, we stay for the relationships made along the way. We all feel it when the community loses one of our own, and we stand with all those who mourn this tragic loss. We carry the memory and the pride of Derek Phillips with us both on and off the field.

The Laker Marching Band has dedicated this performance of our chorale: “You’ll Never Walk Alone” arranged by our director, Dr. John Martin, in loving memory of Derek Phillips.
